Re: Dancing and nightlife!

by tompt

Have not been there but there is a disco:
Dancing Ahoy
Koninginneweg 1
6301 GS Valkenburg
http://www.discoahoy.nl/
Or you can go to the casino, at the top of the Cauberg
:http://www.hollandcasino.nl/
And there are lots of very good pubs there !

See the tourist information site for more info:

Have fun, and don´t forget the christmas markets in the caves.

If you're after clubbing, I'd advie you to go to the neighbouring big city of Maastricht.

But when you want to go to some great pubs, restaurants, casinos etc Valkenburg is a great place. Just wander around the city and you'll see loads to choose from.

More about "Mergel" (chalk-sand-stone)

by Pavlik_NL

"Mergel", a Limburgian name for chalk-sand-stone, is a soft kind of stone that can be cut out of the rocks by large blocks with some patience and a metal device. One can even draw lines in it with the nails or scratch names or drawings with a key or other little sharp object (favourite business of many visitors, according to the lists with names and pictures everywhere throughout the town. In the hills of Southern Limburg there is a thick layer of this material available and has been used for many centuries as buildingblocks for housing, walls and other constructions.

De Blokbrekers (the Blockbusters)

by Pavlik_NL

How to get a nice piece of "Mergel" (Chalk-sand-stone) out of the ground ...

Well, in the Velvet Cave they explain how especially the first block was rather hard to get. The guys who did this patient job first (called "Blokbrekers", which means as much as "Blockbusters")carved out the upper and lower layers until around half a meter deep. Then they hung leadlines to carve out the sides. The first block couldn't be reached in the back, so the men were sticking long metal bars in the lower and upper slides and trembled, pushed, rubbed and pressured until the blok broke free.
Then the Blockbusters were able to make around five blocks per week. Every block brought them around 5 cents (1/100 part of a Dutch Guilder). Now-a-days there is only one place left where they make blocks of "Mergel". They produce (with machines) around 14 blocks per day and is merely for restaurating buildings made from this special material.

Kasteel Oost

by tompt

Kasteel Oost (East Castle) is just outside of Valkenburg along the oostweg.

It is built in the beginning of the 16th century. And was used as the house of the nobels in Valkenburg. Nowadays it is a partycentre and there are weddings held here. People live in the adjoining buildings.

Kasteel Oost is national monument and is built completely out of mergel , the stone that was mined from the caves.

There is a great footpath along the Geul after you passed the castle.

lunch on the sunny terrace

by tompt about Brakke Berg

After a walk along the Geul this is the perfect spot to have lunch or just a drink at their sunny terrace. We once stopped there when Gonnie came back from walking to Meerssen and Tom was cycling in the neighbourhood coming down from the village Berg. A good place to meet and have lunch together. The sandwich was good but the beer was a little bit expensive.

Valkenier

by tompt

When you bring kids to Valkenburg there is lots of fun for them too.
For instance in amusementspark de Valkenier .
With only €5 as entry fee for all attractions except the minicars and roundtrip Valkenburg it is the best priced park of Europe.
They are open all summer from 10:00-17:00.
