I've been looking around for a cheap place to stay in Valkenburg and can only find expensive hotels, all the links on google to hostels turn into nothing.
I could do a day trip but the train one way from where I'm staying will be 3.5hrs, a little too long for a day trip I think.
Unfortunately I'll be too early for the Kerstmis markets, but I'm sure we'll find a lot more to do....

Stayokay Maasticht is moving!
Stayokay Maastricht will be open until 1 October 2005. After that our present establishment will close it's doors and we'll start with the (re)building of a new establishment in Maastricht. We hope to open the doors of our new hostel in the beginning of 2007.
I did find a place for €75 a double room which isn't bad when two are sharing on www.hotels.nl so might have to go with that.

Valkenburg is not a traditional Dutch town ...by that I mean theres not a lot of canals ,and windmills ...its hilly...dominated by its castled ridge,almost like a Rhine town ...But the Geul River has been managed as it comes through the town ,and seems like a canal with some nice homes ,and pretty squares along its banks ...
Valkenburg is situated on the river Geul. Just a smal stream that runs through the town and southern Limburg. A nice thing to do is to make a walk alongside the river to the nearby town of Schin op Geul.
Valkenburg, and Limburg as well, is a very special province and you will find out about that when you watch the details. For example the little chaples down the landscapes little backroads and in the villages and towns the sometimes tiny little statues of "our dear lady Mary" inside the walls, are the living proove of a still quite religious population and that's the truth. Roman Catholism, doesn't live anywehere stronger within the people then in Limburg. Something that is to be discovered in these details as well as in the hearts of most Limburgians.
Restaurant Gaudi specialises in spanish dishes. At the weekends there is a spanish buffet to choose from. And you can always choose to have tapas (small spanish dishes). Six tapas of your choose for a menu.
The design of the restaurant is inspired by Gaudi. Many flamboyant colored mosaics.
Valkenburg already had it's sources for centuries, but actually only in the last, one started with more commercial exploitation of the name "Valkenburg". Especially with the huge complex "Thermae 2000" this "kurort" or "spa" awareness has grown and yearly many thousands come to relax themselves in the waters of these bathinghouses. Like it is almost supposed to be, Valkenburg already had it's casino and evening entertainment. So if you want to have yourself spoiled, book one of the many welness-programms and enjoy Valkenburg.
