If you're an avid biker (like my husband) Valkenburg and surroundings are very suitable for nice bike tours. The tour version of the Amstel Gold Race for instance.
It's an organized tour and you can choose the distance you want to do: from 50 upto 250 km. The tour goes through the hilly landscape of Zuid-Limburg and - according to my husband - is very nice. Equipment? Well ... you will need a bike! And a helmet.
The next stop is at the other side of the river. A lane with enormous birch trees leads you to Kasteel Schaloen.
It dates back to the 13th century and is restyled in 1656. The other buildings on the site are used as a hotel. So looking for something different to stay in.......
I would recommend a tour of the Ruined Castle that overlooks Valkenburg. It's an on your own kind of experience, which is well documented via informational signs on the history of the place (English/Nederlands)...I kind of felt like I had walked into a Tomb Raider Video game. Very cool . And, if you don't go the same time as the busload of British School children, a fairly quiet ,uncrowded experience.Highly recommended ,particularly to those from the USA who see anything built before1900 as old. This place was started over a THOUSAND years ago. Great Photo Ops. here as well.
This museum is a small one about the history and art of the district. Mostly interesting for the dutch speaking.
The building is a design of J.H.C. Kröner, architect from Amsterdam, and was built in 1900. Originally it was a cityhall with a postoffice attached to it.
