Sit and watch people go by
Buy a beer, or whatever other drink you like, and sit down at one of the many bars or restaurants. Just watch the crowd go by.
You can sit outside in summer or in winter because there big heaters on the walls.

The last day of April a tree is placed in the centre of town. The tree is called a 'may-tree'. It is a big happening and really fun to see how they put it upright.
The tradition of planting the maytree is known from the 13th century. It was a fertillity cermony. Later it bacame a symbol to protect the people, cattle and houses in the village.
The tree is put here by the unmarried men of Valkenburg.
There's a lot of fake stuff in Valkenburg. The coal-mine is fake. The Roman catacombs are fake. The caves in the hill aren't really caves. And this of course isn't the real cave of Lourdes. You will find that one in Lourdes.
It is an exact copy though, and is used as an open-air chapel regularly.
A good italian restaurant just outside of the busy centre of Valkenburg. It is located in a pedestration street.
The food was good and plenty. We both had a tomato soup, which was absolutely delicious. Tom then ordered a fish pizza and Gonnie had pasta with salmon. Both are to be recommended. For more ideas on the menu check the website of the restaurant.
The history of this building is a bit unclear. When parts of Limburg were divided between Spain and the Republic of the United Netherlands in 1661 much of Valkenburg remained Spanish. This is supposed to be the Spanish governmental building, but there are reasons to doubt this. Especially because it stands very close to the border between the two territories, this being the Geul river.
Anyway, this is now the VVV, the tourist information office. It's the oldest VVV in the country, as a matter of fact.
(Need I say that it was built of marl?)
