Hotel De Oude Molen is located in Schin Op Geul, just 2 km far from the nice town of Valkenburg. It is in a quite position. It is a three stars hotel but I found the service quite poor for a such hotel. The hotel has got 13 rooms and an own car park.
The hotel is located in a quite position. They give me a depandance room (for three people) which was very big: it has got television, telephone and also the sauna. But I found the room not very clean: I found more than 6 spiders on the walls, there were opened bottle of coke and orange in the fridge and used soap in the bathroom. In the hotel wasn't impossible to have dinner (the site tell that it has got a restaurant) with a right motive because the staff speak a very poor English. The breakfast buffet was very poor: there were only two kind of disgusting bread (in my opinion it wasn't cooked), yougurt, some local sweet and quite good choice of cereals.
It has got a bad ratio quality price.
We had booked a room for one night through travelocity.com for last weekend, but when we got there all we found where notices in the window that the hotel was shut down due to licensing issues (my dutch is shaky at best, so that is what we deducted from the signs). From the website it looked OK -so if you want to stay there better call ahead and find out if they are back in business.
Another hotel across the street from us was De Geulhemermolen. Beside this hotel is access to a trail in the woods along the River Geul. The trail is used for walking and mostly horseback riding. There were a few horses next to the hotel, but I’m not sure if they are connected. I assume if you want to ride you could enquire at the hotel.
A view of the back suggests this hotel used to be a mill; the name is also a good hint. The hotel is right on the River Geul and there is a footbridge and little falls in the back. The web site has information on its history; unfortunately I don’t read Dutch.
There were a few more hotels right in the same area, same street even. This one, Hotel Berg en Dal, was across the side street from Huis aan de Rots and seemed to have a lively nightlife. Keep in mind these hotels are in Berg en Terblijt, not actually Valkenburg, but I could not find Berg en Terblijt in VT destinations.
Small room maybe for a three star, but very comfy. Like most beds in the Netherlands we had a duvet... better than at home lol. The room had a private bathroom with shower.
Price: € 75 breakfast included
This picture is of the back part of our hotel. If you stay here you should try to get a room in the rock.
A very unique quality about this place is that it is actually in the rocks. The rocks in this region are soft rock (marlstone), which allowed for easy formation of caves. The marlstone was (and still is?) mined and used for construction of nearly everything in the region.
3 star pension hotel
Was a great place. Nice romantic courtyard where we had a beer before packing it in. Small room, but very cozy and clean… such a comfortable bed! Breakfast the next morning, after being woken by the rooster… yes we were in the country now… is included in the price.
Romantic courtyard, very comfy bed and great sleep.
Safe.. the front door is locked at night and they give you a key.
Hotel Brakke Berg, down the hill from the Kasteel helped us find a room. They had no vacancy either, but helped us out a great deal.
Being that there was a conference of ministers or some big shindig that weekend, they were worried for us and started calling all the reasonable places they could think of. Bingo! After several calls they found us a room. I would recommend this place to anyone… be assured you will be received with a friendly smile and great service.
Very friendly and helpfull staff.
Know to find a place to sleep… again arriving after dark. We first headed to a Castle Hotel which we read about on the welcoming sign. With some searching we managed to find Kasteel Geulzicht.
Of course no room at the Inn, lol.
They gave us a booklet with information and the prices were really not that bad.
If it was any indication to the rest of the place... the lobby was luxurious, with dark furniture, paintings on the ceiling and grand chandeliers.
Would have loved to stay in a Castle.
From the balcony of our appartment, with our own kitchen, toilet and bathroom, we had a great view over the Geul valley.
The appartment was spacious for only two of us. The appartment next to us, which was rented by Gonnies brother, was just as big but had two bedrooms. Therefor the livingroom there was a bit small for four.
The owners were very kind.
Prices are around 25 Euro a person, which is not bad in VAlkenburg.
This B & B is situated a little outside the centre of Valkenburg in the green hills of the first Ardennes. One finds a wonderful garden and gets a good parkingplace for a car. The place is connected to the nextdoor farmhouse and is well inside a natural reserve area. There are seven rooms, with in total 19 beds.
