Travel Tips for Valkenburg

by LoriPori

Built in 1900 and designed by JHC Kroner, the VALKENBURG MUSEUM can be found right in the heart of the town , on Grotestraat 31.
Inside the former Town Hall, you will find artifacts detailing the history of Valkenburg and the surrounding areas. Discover how marlstone was formed and how the people have used the stone to build their homes and town structures.
Inside you will also find a collection of drawings by the well-known artist Charles Eyck.

Amstel Gold Race

by tompt

If you are in to biking do try the Amstel Gold Race tourversion.
It is held a day before the professionals race. In 2004 that was on saturday april 17th. You can choose a distance between 50 and 250 km. Most people ride the 150km which is tough enough because of all the hills you have to climb.

You can subscribe at the website of the Amstel Gold Race. They give you a transponder and along the course there are several points you are registered. When you subscribe you can give a mobile phone number that receives messages of your progress. That way Gonnie knew when to head for the terrace to see Tom and a few friends finish. (OK, i made it to the terrace, but, it could be the beer, didn't see them....) Good bike, extra drinks and food are availlable along the way, for participants free of charge.

Another footpath

by tompt

Another path that is great to take starts at the end of the Plenkert . This footpath is also following the Geul. The river is left to its natural state and if it wants to turn another way they will let it do so. No human interference here. There are herds of animals put there by a nature conservation organisation. The animals are mostly on the other side of the river.

Shady respite

by robertgaz

A short stroll from the castle ruins in Valkenburg is a lovely patch of quiet forest called the Vogelbos.

It's a secluded patch of refreshing greenery in which to escape the heat and the hordes.

Romeinse Katacomben

by tompt

A real copy of parts of the Roman catacombs, with fresco's, altars, tombs and graves. The roman catacombs were underground cemetaries. This reconstruction was done in 1908-1913 on a scientific base by architect P.J.H. Cuypers. This architect is also famous for its Rijksmuseum and the central staion in Amsterdam.

Tours are about one hour and they show you only a part of the caves. If you are lucky and your guide wants to have another tour they will go into parts normally not included in tours. Guides are very experienced and do guide duty in Rome regularly. Last tour, december 2003, we had a guide that normally lives in Rome and is a expert on embalming bodies.
Everybody is given his own candle so you can see where you are walking.
The tour can be a bit scaring for young kids as they are telling all about how they put bodies inthe small graves (just cut of the arms and legs.....)

september - march
saterday and sunday 14 hour
