RUINS OF AN ANCIENT CASTLE
by LoriPori
High up on Heunsberg Hill lies the RUINS OF AN ANCIENT CASTLE or "Kasteelruine".
This medieval marlstone Castle was built in the early 1100's and destroyed in 1672 by Willem III.
It is the only hilltop fortress in the Netherlands and from there you will have magnificent views of Valkenburg and the Geul Valley.
fishing
by tompt
Believe it or not, but there is an excellent fishing spot in Valkenburg. Ofcourse you can go fishing in the Geul, in search for trout. But you will probably be better of fishing in the pond of the local fishclub in the Geulpark.
You need a permit to fish here. The permit can be obtained from the VVV office or the office of fishclub Geulpark. When you are 15 years or older you also need a permit from the dutch government. This can also be bought at the VVV.
Fish must be returned to the water after catching.
spring in Zuid-Limburg
by tompt
It is the most southern part of our country and spring always arives here first. The blossoms are just a few days earlier as where we live, near Amsterdam.
In this picture you can see two swans nesting. The one on the left just shows one egg under it.
Steenkolenmijn
by tompt
The steenkolenmijn is an old coalmine now operated as a museum. It is the last coalmine in the Netherlands!
Coalmining was the main industry in Limburg until natural gas was found in the north of our country and gas won the battle from coal. This mine closed in 1965.
The tours are given by former coalminers. As they closed 40 years ago, the old miners are also old guides. Not everybody speaking english, so ask first.
You are taken into the mine, which was a horizontal mine, this means you don't go down a shaft. The tour took about 75 minutes, and was really worth it.
Opening hours:
1 april - 1 november : 10:00 -17:00
1 november - 1april : mon-fri : 14:00 (only one tour)
sat-sun : 13:00 , 14:00 and 15:00 (3 tours)
groups of 25 or more can visit by appointment.
closed: 25th december, 1th january and during carnaval.
City walls
by tompt
Just a small part of the citywalls are remaining. Once, when the castle was still standing the entire village was surrounded by walls. The Grendelpoort and the Berkelpoort are two remaining citygates and at the other end this part of citywall is all that is left. This old walls are situated next to Kasteel Halder. To walk from here to both gates will take no longer than 10 minutes and shows how small the village was in the 14th century.
