Best route to get from Aalsmeer to central Amsterdam
by akowal
I have a car, but I'm not sure how easy it is to drive in Amsterdam. We're staying in Aalsmeer.
Is the easiest route to drive to a train station and park there? Which train station is recommended?
Alternately, is there an easy way to drive into Amsterdam from Aalsmeer?

Don't park in Amsterdam, that's way too expensive.
Read http://www.bereikbaaramsterdam.nl/live/main.asp?subsite_id=23 for information on parking on the edge of A'dam, and then taking public transportation.

for your route, try www.viamichelin.com.
Put in the exact address of your accommodation.
And avoid rush hour. Don't travel before 9 pm and between 4-7 am if you can help it :-)

I agree with AT, don't park downtown Amsterdam. High costs and you have to know your way. If you do want to go check my Amsterdam transportation tips (2nd set of tips).
It depends on the traffic density. You are near the Schiphol Airport and the busy A4 highway.
Options:
Outside the rush hours: take the A4 and park at the Olympic Stadium and use the P& R (free tram tickets).
When the A4 is blocked: Drive to the Neighbouring Uithoorn and follow the signs to Amstelveen. It's a straight way for the most part, that leads you to the stadium as well.
Easy way: Take the direct bus #172 of the Connexxion company. Within 50 minutes you'll be downtown Amsterdam; no hassle.

I agree with pieter_jan_v that the parking at the olympic stadium is probably your best option.
Alternatively, you could park for free in Amstelveen (my hometown), e.g at the student campus Uilenstede or at at the parking at the Max Havelaarlaan near tramstation Onderuit, and take tram 5 or metro 51 to Amsterdam. But now you´ll have to pay for your public transport tickets...It´s either way...
Uilenstede is one of the borders of the zones of the public transport net, therefore traveling to Amsterdam costs you one "strip" less than the parking at the Max Havelaarlaan three stops more south into Amstelveen. Hope this makes sense :-)
Use a routeplanner, your navigation system or a good old-fashioned map to find your way around...

Travel Tips for Aalsmeer
How Aalsmeer became a horticultural master
by Pavlik_NL
In and around Aalsmeer until the 17th century one lived from peat digging (proove are the many lakes in this area now). Then the profit in this lowered and people started to look for other means of income. This quickly was found in fruit and the fruittrees appeared row by row. Also vegetables and strawberries seemed to grwo good on the organic soils here and nearby Amsterdam was a well paying consumer market. Slowly the flowers and plants however became more profitable and the farmers turned over to this speciality. With the first greenhouses and the opportunity to make year'round production, the tone was set and Aalsmeer became the world's capitol of flower-trade.
Aalsmeer seems to have something with art
by Pavlik_NL
It amazes me to see that Aalsmeer has around a five art galeries and several exposition spaces to show and sell the people art. Some artists live in Aalsmeer and obviously it's vicinity gives a lot of positive inspiration to many. The town has indeed a love for art and the fact that some of the wealthier Dutch people live here helps in selling it, of course.
Just some fun about the weather report
by Pavlik_NL
The holy stone of Aalsmeer
Weather predictions since 1887 (and remodeled in 2001)
A stone on a rope tells you everything:
1. if stone is wet, it rains
2. if stone is dry, it's nice weather
3. if stone feels warm, it's sunny
4. if stone is white, there's snow
5. if stone moves, there wind
6. if stone is invisible, there's fog
7. if stone has dropped to the floor, there has been an earthquake.
A poem about Aalsmeer surroundings
by Pavlik_NL
Sinds ze gescheiden is,
het water en het land,
Leeft het hier hand in hand
in een verbintenis
van eeuwenlang innigheid
en mildheid en gemis
en hoop en strijd
het water neemt en geeft
en trouw van mensenhand
bezegelt dit verband
wat men aan liefde heeft
is met dit land gemoeid
omdat het waarlijk leeft
wanneer het bloeit
midden in Holland slaat
dit hart van licht en glas
een bloem die in het gras
voor God te glanzen staat
en zendt te kust te keur
rondom haar overdaad
aan kleur en geur.
translated
Since they are split
the water and the land
They live hand in hand
in a unity
of centuries of deep emotions
tenderness and missing
hope and fight
water takes and gives
and a loyal human hand
determines this unity
and the love one has
is connected to this soil
because it truely lives
when it blossoms
in the midst of Holland
this heart of light and glass
a flower in the grass
shining in front of God
and sending whenever it needs
around and around it's many
lovely colours and smells.
The typical Dutch fishermen's style houses
by Pavlik_NL
Also in Aalsmeer one can find perfect examples of the green facades of the fishermen's style that originates from the area around Zaandam, Marken and Volendam. This style spread all around the "IJsselmeer" (IJssel-lake) and is remarkably enough also found in these neighborhoods, though fishery never was an important professional group here. The houses are however a welcome change in the wide scala of styles that Aalsmeer has.
