I highly recommend Hotel Acacia. I had a great time there and the fellow who runs the place is very accommodating. Hotel or houseboats, it doesn't matter. Both are comfortable and not very expensive.

You Get What You Pay For/Great if You're a Midget
Date of Stay: Dec. 29, 2007- Jan. 3, 2008
Amsterdam accommodations are small, yes, but Hotel Acacia takes first prize. I am 5'9" and could not turn around in the shower unless my arms were at my side. The sleeping area, though bright due to a wall of windows, was cramped. There was only one narrow closet and one small storage cabinet, so there is nowhere to store suitcases, shopping bags, etc. There was also only one small table in the room, so we were constantly walking over items, stacking maps, drinks, and necessities on the table, and living with a sense of disorganization for 5 days.
Be warned also, the front desk is only staffed from around 8 or 9 am until 10 or 11 pm, so if you arrive early (as we did) you will be left waiting outside for the help to arrive. We arrived at 6:30 am, phoned someone at 7am to tell them we were there, and we were told we'd have to wait until 8am. Thank goodness it was only slightly cold for December (45 degrees farenheit). When the help did arrive, he was not very lively or friendly and throughout our stay he always seemed to be in a hurry, even when he served breakfast in the mornings.
We have stayed before in Hotel Hoecksbergen, and though it, too was small, the staff was very friendly and the breakfast much better.
If you want a bit more than the basic comforts, you need to pay a bit more in Amsterdam.
Unique Quality: Very tiny. A bit out of the way in a more local neighborhood, but this can be a plus.

Canal boat accommodations in the Jordaan
This is the interior of the houseboat we stayed in, on the lijnbaansgracht canal just acroos the street from the Acacia.
Nothing fancy, but it all worked, the shower was hot and the beds were very comfortable. All the canal side windows opened.Our room was large by European standards. We also had a small kitchenette (sink, 2 burners, and refridgerator), cordless phone, and cable tv w/remote.
Unique Quality: Although the lijnbaansgracht is a narrow canal, we still managed to see, among other things, a family taking there small boat out for a ride and a family of ducks on several days.

Canal views in the Jordaan
We had a pleasant 4 night stay in a houseboat rented through the hotel. Although our room had a kitchenette, we walked across the street for breakfast at the hotel.
The breakfast room is at the narrow end of the "pie" facing the lijnbaansgracht canal.
Unique Quality: Literally just a few steps away, the Lindengracht street market takes place Saturdays.
You'll find clothing, shoes, flowers, various foods and other 'flea market' type items.
Just around the corner at the Noordermarkt is an 'Organic Farmers Market' too. On Mondays the Noordermarkt hosts a general street market with new and used clothes, books, records, and assorted other junk.

Hotel 30 December - 1st Jan
Hi, we are looking for a hotel for these dates. I got a room from Priceline for $90/night (Le Meridien Apollo - not best location I think?) for 28th-30th, unfortuantely it seems that 30th and 31st are high season, and the hotel prices basically double (e.g., €99 euros from le meridien website goes to €179).
Any ideas for something reasonably priced and central for these two nights?

Amsterdam is not large, with the tram it's a matter of minutes to the city center but you could walk too. So I don't think there is a problem with location. For these dates you got a pretty good price. Try http://www.hotelnet.nl/en/ to see for yourself.

pl try HOTEL A TRAIN just opp AMSTERDAM central station where we stayed last year for 69euros/night with superb breakfast. pl try its web site.

You might try Hotel Acacia on the Lindengracht (Jordaan), who have rooms/apts/houseboats @ a reasonable prices.

I checked most booking sites last week and there was little or nothing available in the center for these dates. A few on the real outskirts and nr the airport.
Its nothing unusual for the city to be full for New Years Eve. The advice is book well in advance. Good luck.
