A floating hotel
The Amstel Botel is a floating hotel that was located at the East-side of the Central Station for many years. In January 2008 the Botel moved to the other side of "'IJ", the Amsterdam harbour.
The ferry from the Central Station is free and will bring you to its new location.
Also there's a free shuttle bus service from the Central Station.

Amsterdam's Floating Hotel
I've never stayed here and I've heard mixed reviews about the place, some good some not so good. It's quite reasonably priced though with double rooms from 84E.
Unique Quality: It's a boat - it floats - whoopee.

Boat Not Bad
I would recommend this hotel mostly for its location - three mins walk from the Centraal Station, and situated on a picturesque section of canal (just make sure you get a canal-side room, the land-side overlooks a yucky buiding site).
The room was fair, if a little basic. The bed was very comfortable, (but watch out for the sticking-out panel above the headboard which contains the reading lights - its a hazzard and guaranteed to give you a headache when you crash your head on it!) The bathroom was very very tiny, but adequate. You do have to sit on the loo at a funny angle to avoid the basin, but this is something which can be dealt with. Our main problem with the bathroom in our room was that it was shabby and suffering from mildew. In fact the whole room, although clean, was a little shabby around the edges.
The other thing to think about when booking this hotel is "how well do I want to get to know my room's neighbours?". The rooms have walls and floors which are so thin they flex, and you can hear everything that is going on around your room.
And the plumbing...ah yes...! Don't book this hotel if you are a fan of the power shower. No such luxury here. Also, the plumbing is the noisiest I have ever enountered in a hotel. The pipes whistle, thump, bang and make dripping sounds 24 hours a day!
Bar? Open late (but they all are in Amsterdam!) Convinient for a late pint before bed, but utterly charmless in all respects.
Final verdict? Well, ignore the three star rating. This is a phony continental rating. If the hotel was in the UK it would only be a two star hotel. But if you are on a budget, and just need a cheap crash pad within easy distance of the Centraal Station - this is the one to pick. Despite the negative points, I would recommend this.

Spend a night on a floating hotel
Easy check-in /check-out with friendly reception staff. I had a small room with small bathroom with shower, TV, and small safe box.
It is floating on water, it doesn't move at all so no worry for sea-sick.
Game room and cafe/restaurant on board.
They hold your luggage before the check-in and after the check-out.
Unique Quality: You can pick a room with landview or canal view. If you don't spend much time in a room, choose landview room and save 5 euro.
There are single, double/twin, and triple rooms.

The Botel....Amesterdam is definitally unique
I have to say it is definitally another unique aspect of Amsterdam. Overall the "Botel" was not bad...not good either...However, most hotels in Amsterdam are not cheap, and this place was rather reasonable. The location was very close to the train station (just walk out and go left) The rooms were very small and fairly clean. The staff was friendly and tried to be helpful. Although not too close to the major attractions, it was close to all the major bus/metro lines. It was okay, but next time I will try to look for something else. But, I don't know if I'll find anything with okay location for this price.
Unique Quality: It's a Botel...need I say more

A Hotel On a Canal
A Hotel on a canal WEIRD yep!
Didn't spend much time here as you normally dont when your visiting places, but it's clean and cheap...what more do you need? We paid 88 euros for a double room, which me and my buddy thought was a steal! It's very close to central station and 5 mins from RL district.Book off Internet! amsterdamhotels.com
Unique Quality: IT'S A FRIGGIN BOAT...HOW UNIQUE IS THAT!!!!!!!

good value, very centered
The hotel is 5 mn from central station (where you arrive from the airport) and very close to the center of the town. you also have access to most of the trams at central station.
the hotel is basic inside but clean. you can also choose to have a room with view on the big canal. Prices are reasonnable considering its location.

A Big Disappointment
While this was a great location, the staff was VERY unfriendly. We asked on two different occassions, to 2 different staff, recommendations on eating and they acted as if we were bothering them with nonsense. We have traveled all over the world and been to Amsterdam before and never recieved such poor hospitality. I suggest a small canal house or B&B---We have stayed at the Rho Hotel before and enjoyed this hotel.
Unique Quality: Only Hotel on a boat

Hell on Water
Absolutley the WORST place I ahve ever had the misfortune of staying in, and I HAVE been in some downright BAD pplaces..!!!!!
First, to make it bad our plane coming over had been cancelled out of Manchester. We finally arrived in the Botel about 8:00 pm.
They lost our reservations.
They offered uss the only room they had left, a tripple at 160 Euro a night, with the assurance that it would be straightened out in the morning by the manager.
In the morning th manger said he could get us into our room at 3pm that day, so in order to allow us to continur to see the city and not have to lug our bags with us he offered to put them in a secure room behind the front desk.
Then it happened.!!
We retturn3ed around 7:00 and they had everything straightened out and had gotten us into our room. WE collected our bags and went up. We had reservations at an Egyptian themed resteraunt that night so we started getting ready.
That is when we noticed it!!
Our bags had been rifled through!!! and to make it worse. Stuff was missing, not just anything but the worst thing you could think of, NO the cash we left in the front of the bag all 200 Euro of itwas still there. But my wifes undergarments and alot of our toiletries were just plain gone.
I couldn't believe it. I immediatly went down to see Azeez, the night manager. And of course, there was nothing he could do. My wife felt violated and we should have checked out there and then but didn't. I said I would talk to the manager the next day so I did. Nothing he could do either, all of our Cigs and Stuff were gone for good. Oh well was all he could say.
Didn't Even give a comp breakfast the Cheap Losers!!!!
Unique Quality: None, Breakfast Bar in the Morning that is all!!! And at 20.00 Euro for Rubber Eggs and Rock hard Toast.
You can do much better at any Mom and Pop Resteraunt in the Town, Even alot of the pubs have breakfast menus cause they know the hotels serve their guests crap!! Even the damn internet was 3 Euro in a coin box.

Cheap Budget Accommodation
I paid, I think, about €89 for a double room, 2 single beds, small rooms, but bear in mind this is a boat. You can see the Botel from the entrance of Central Station so you dont need a taxi and is about 5 mins walk from the centre. Rooms cleaned daily, and friendly, helpful staff. If you're looking for a cheap convenient roof over your head, and not expecting the Hilton, then I recommend the Botel. I would stay here the next time I come.
Unique Quality: It is unique purely because youre staying on a boat! Makes a change from the norm. However I would pay the extra euros for the water view, not the land view ie, a brick wall.

botel ferry times
hin guys. am coming over to amsterdam and staying in the botel which has moved since my last visit. any idea how often the free ferry from central station is and what time does it stop? cheers. h
Re: botel ferry times
See: http://www.gvb.nl/english/travellers/transporttypes/Pages/ferries.aspx
It's the "NDSM-werfveer" timetable you have to download.
As far as I know, it runs till midnight. Thereafter there is a Botel bus shuttle available (or GVB nighbusses).
