Suggestions on Renting a Bike

by Dobbitt

Me and my girlfriend will be in Amsterdam on 5th June for two days and want to rent bikes. What will your suggestions be about the issues like where to rent, and where to bike in and around the city? (Stayin in Kooyk's Hotel near Leidseplein area.)

I would recommend a bike trip north of Amsterdam towards Broek in Waterland (http://members.virtualtourist.com/vt/tfr/1/312/4/1eb1bc/), Zuiderwoude, Marken (perhaps make a boat trip to Volendam), Uitdam, Durgerdam and back to Amsterdam.

happy biking
Jaap

The last one is in Dutch, but the ANWB shops have useful cycling information...Maybe check with one of them.

Travel Tips for Amsterdam

Summary of Tips

by jss1018

For us, the key to having such a great time while in Amsterdam was research and planning, and a lot of it. All possible courtesy of the Internet and impossible to that extent only a few years ago. I highly recommend this VirtualTourist site, and have fallen in love with it. I would not have found the Krasnapolsky apartments unless I had read a couple of member experiences, since no general hotel site I came across about the Kras even seemed to mention them. Plus I can't imagine any source for as much variety and depth of information, including the best travel guides, as you can find from actual visitor experiences listed here.

I know there are plenty of folks who just "wing it" when traveling, backpacking and so forth, and I know that has to be a blast. For those a little older, having a good plan and knowledge of where you're going may be the ticket to having a great time. Do allow yourself some time in any pre-planned activities, though, for spontaneous journeys and adventures. They're everywhere in this marvelous city! Our fondest memory has to be just the architecture and feel of the incredible canal houses and buildings, their history and old-world beauty, and the charm of the winding streets and alleyways leading everywhere. For us, just getting from one place to another was half the fun and a treat for the eyes.

For one single thing, and I almost hate to list one since it excludes things as meaningful as the Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank House, it would have to be a canal boat tour.

Chinatown has everything to...

by l_joo

Chinatown has everything to look at if you are in Amsterdam, yes almost everything in the whole world.
there's even one Malaysian restaurant, 'betul punya' Indonesian restaurants, sex shops, my eyes just couldn't stop looking at them...It's my #1 and favourite city in Europe. I couldn't remember which road to which road but just don't worry, you won't get lost. There's one streets selling almost 'everything' like wooden shoes, tulips and many other souvenirs, just like a flea market. Just Enjoy

Ajax

by dlandt

Ajax is the local soccer team. I watched them tie Valencia in a local nameless braun bar, snacking on miniature sausages and drinking beer. A portie kaas, or portion of cheese, would have been perfect, but they were out.

Shopping in Amsterdam...

Shopping in Amsterdam

Shopping and culture go hand in hand in Amsterdam. The large department stores are situated on the Dam, on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, on the Rokin, on the Nieuwe Dijk, in the Kalverstraat and in the Leidsestraat.
A nice shopping mall is ‘Magna Plaza’ this mall is only a hundred meters away from the hostel.
Next to Magna Plaza there is the big supermarket 'Albert Heijn' where you can buy your groceries.

A City of Reflections

by adambeau

Paris is known as 'The City of Lights."
For me, Amsterdam is "The City of Reflections."

Unfortunately, I've not been to Paris yet, but if there were ever a city that illuminates the spirit of life and adventure inside a person, I'd say Amsterdam must be that one city.

The glimmering reflections of the dancing lights along the waters of the canals... from the houses and stores and lampposts, the cars racing past, the people passing in between the shimmering beams of light, and even the glow shining up and outward from the canals arched waterways themselves... you cannot help but look at this city with a whole new joy for it's own unique reflection. What do I miss the most?

"just being there..."
