train/street cars
by bemikes
The city is quite beautiful. The canals and the buildings are something to see! The thing that is a bit overwhelming is the amount of drugs and people that are on them! It is amazing how many are walking around in a haze at one point in the evening. It is a calm city concidering. The red light district is a sad place to end up in. On a lighter note the food is amazing in the resteraunts. It is easy to get around. Make sure when you get on the train/street cars if you don't have a ticket you get in on the front so you can purchase a ticket on the way in the train. We got in on the back and tried to buy tickets on the way out. They were not pleased about that. They gave us a free ride but told us to ALWAYS get in in the front if you don't have tickets. Walking along the Canals at night, as the sun was setting. And I loved seeing the old wind mills on the highways. (autobahns) The old farm houses and the fields on the way from amsterdam to Maastrict was really cool.
Just go. Go now. Go back. Bring friends or not.

I love walking arround and getting lost. I like sitting in the park and smooking a joint and walking arround and getting lost some more. I like picking one bar and going ever night untel I become a regular. I like the liberal views, the Dutch people, and public transportation. I love everything about the damn place. I went to see "Spinal Tap" in dutch! Ha!
go and see the Vondelpark in...

go and see the Vondelpark in the summertime, its filled with all sorts of people, lots to see, just sit on the grass somewhere in the sun and wait for the guy that comes around and sells cans of beer, very relaxing. or when you don't want to sit on the grass there is the filmmuseum; called Vertigo, where you can have something to eat or drink and in the evening they will show movies on a big screen outside on thursdaynight ( Vertigo )
In the middle of the parc is also 'het blauwe theehuis' (the blue teahouse) big terace, very popular place at the moment. (clublist only in Dutch) the atmosphere.... (picture is Vertigo, its borrowed from www.amsterdamhotspots.nl) amsterdam hotspots
Red Lights
by acemj
This might be one of the only pages on VT to hardly make mention of the Red Light District, but that doesn't mean I haven't been there. In fact, my hostel was located just on the edge of it. Personally, I think it's kind of pathetic to see what goes on there, but I'm not one to judge . . .
In fact, during the daytime, the area is actually pretty nice. There are still some women in windows eyeing you as you pass by, but you'll also see families and people dining in area restaurants. At night however, the place gets crowded with drug dealers and tourists and really just isn't my kind of scene.
Cyclists at the Munt
by Nemorino
The Muntplein is a large amorphous square where three major streets, and a number of minor ones, all come together.
It is infested with automobiles, but that doesn't stop cyclists, trams and pedestrians from using it as equal partners.
Of course wherever tram tracks and cyclists share street space you have to be careful not to get your front wheel caught in one of the tracks. This happened to me once, decades ago, while I was coming down off a bridge on a rainy day in Bern, Switzerland, and I had an embarrassing fall. (Luckily it was only embarrassing, and nothing worse.)
