  • Friendly little hotel on Weteringschans

    by

We have stayed at the Art Gallery Hotel several times (so called because it is opposite the Rijksmuseum). It is very centrally situated on Weteringschans - just off the Leidseplein. The rooms are clean and comfortable with ensuite facilities. (If you get to know the staff -they might upgrade your room for you :)) The double/twin rooms at the front of the building are light bright and airy and have a little balcony where you can relax and watch the Amsterdammers go by on their bikes. The hotel is run by Ed and Ed and they are very friendly and helpful and are happy to make bookings and reservations for you. (They keep a huge bowl of jelly beans on the counter too! :)

The breakfast room is at basement level and is small but nicely furnished. Breakfast is substantial continental fare, bread, cereal, cheese, ham, fruit, juice, tomatoes and cucumber - and, best of all - Mohammed makes a lovely HUGE omlette every morning. Bring your own t-bags though, continental tea-bags are not so strong as those in the UK.

The stairs are VERY steep and VERY narrow -no fun when you are lugging bags and rucksacks etc up them after a long days traveling - but just smile nicely and someone might just carry them for you!!!!

The walls are a little thin - so bear this in mind when you are giggling hysterically over nothing! You might get a short fat German businessman knocking on the door in a fluffy white bath robe asking you to keep the noise down!

Unique Quality: If you ask Ed (or whoever is on reception) for the key to the terrace, you can sit out and enjoy the lovely views over Amsteram from the roof top.

It is VERY central and soo convenient for canal boat tours, bike hire, Leidseplein and the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseums. I am planning to stay here for a 5th time so that speaks for itself really!!

    Directions: Opposite Rijksmusem

I love staying at this hotel... it is clean and friendly... though early in the morning it can be a little noisy if you have a room at the front because of the trams.

Unique Quality: It's very central, right opposite the Rijksmusem.

Just another shot of the hotel. The actual road isn't too special but it's very conveniently situated.

Unique Quality: It sooo near to everything!

Directions: 3 mins from Leidseplein, 1 minute from the Rijksmuseum!

As always our stay here at the Art Gallery Hotel is made all the more pleasant and enjoyable by the helpful and friendly staff, Ed, Mohammed et al. We have chosen a *Deluxe* room at the front of the building with a view over Weteringschans for our stay this time. This is the view looking west towards the Leidseplein. We have also had single rooms 201 and 204. These rooms share a bathroom on the landing. All the rooms have new flat screen TV's.

Unique Quality: Friendly, helpful and accomodating staff - and great breakfasts!

    Great value for money...

This budget type hotel is ideally situated in the museum quarter just across the road from the Reijksmuseum. The hotel occupies a traditional Amsterdam town house complete with steep narrow staircases - I was lucky, Mohammed (the chef) was on hand to take my bags up to the first floor.

I booked a single room for one night as a stopover. I arrived quite late at night but got a really friendly welcome on arrival. The reception staff gave me a streetmap of Amsterdam and also pointed out a few of the tourist attractions. As the hotel was fairly empty during the time of my stay I was offered a luxurious double en-suite room for the same price as the single. I was shown the single room which I had originally booked, this was a smallish room with a bed & a dressing table with shared facilities across the corridor - for 52 Euros you can't go wrong.

The double room I stayed in was roomy, warm & cosy. I was given a choice of rooms as the rooms at the front of the hotel have a balcony and lovely views but are a bit noisier than the rooms at the back due to the trams. I opted for the room with a view, the noise from the Trams didn't really bother me that much - you soon get used to it! The decor is a bit dated but this added to the charm of the hotel. There is also a free alarm call - the Reijksmuseum's clocktower - it's only a stones throw away & ensures that you wake up to some lovely traditional chimes.

The breakfast room of the hotel is on the ground floor down a flight of narrow steep stairs - if mobility is a problem, this hotel is not for you. I digress... Breakfast was of the continental variety during my stay but I believe cooked brekkie is on the menu normally. I was offered a ham, cheese, smoked salmon, boiled eggs as well as cereal, bread, jam & honey on the tables there was also a tea/coffee machine for you to help yourself to a beverage.

Overall I really enjoyed my short stay here due to the cleanliness and cosy nature of the rooms and the friendliness of the staff.

Unique Quality: Traditional town house - no double glazing here!
