Iterenary 2 nights in AMS

by sandeepgarg

We are 9 persons (4 adults, 1 Sr. Citizen 69yr., 4 kids 13,9,7,6 yrs. We shall be arriving on 14th May morning in Amsterdam. We would be leaving on 16th May for 1 night in Brussels, then down to Paris for 4 nights.

In Amsterdam we are staying at the Novotel. DO WE NEED to book advance transfers or coach from Schipol to hotel Novotel? Can we do it by Taxis? Which is better?

Also

I have planned this way, Is it OK?

14th May afternoon Trip to Kukenhof Gardens (tulip Gardens, Night--red light district.

15th May Madurodam, Zaanse Schans windmills (for windmills, cheese factory and clogs), Anne Franke house, and evening canal cruise with Pizza.

16th May we leave for Brussels.

Is this ok, or too tiring.?

How do we get from hotel to railway station on 16th May morning?

Thanks a lot in advance friends.

Hi,

Check http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/ for public transport. See here for Schiphol hotel shuttle: http://www.schipholhotelshuttle.nl/site/home.asp

I'm not a big fan of Madurodam, although it may be nice for the kids. It's in Den Haag though and out of the way. I would skip it and look for another activity. You spend relatively little time in Amsterdam!

Cheers,
Dennis

Full details of what exactly?

There is a mini van shuttle service at Schiphol for easy and cost efficient transport to your hotel; see: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/cc040

I would not recommend taking a taxi.

Your schedule indeed leaves very little time to see things in Amsterdam.

Your hotel is close to the Amsterdam-Zuid train station. For your trip to the Keukenhof you can start there and tarvel to Schiphol and take bus #58 from there.

For the Zaanse Schans just take tram 4 to the Central Station and from there the train to Koog-Zaandijk.

Madurodam is just taking a train to Den Haag Centraal (The Hague CS) and from there the tram to Madurodam.

The Anne Frank house ir the top attraction with on average a queuue of 2 hours at noon through the afternoon. Better check their website for possible evening tickets and advanced booking.

Canal boat tours should be no problem, although it will be a busy long weekend. The Thursday before your arrical is a Public Holiday.

Have a second look into travel times and the amount of walking (Madurodam, the Keukenhof and the Zaanse Schans are all walking outdoor activities).

BTW Always have a plan B in case of rain.

On the other hand, with 9 persons, a (minivan) taxi may be cheaper than the minivan service...

Madurodam is a blast! I went a few years ago in February and they had a whole Ice House built to play around in as well as walking through the model buildings! It is only about 15-20 minutes away on the way to Haarlem---you should try to see Haarlem as well---gorgeous buildings....and a very large pipe organ in the big church...

Hw and where to get the minivan Taxi as suggested??

Re: Iterenary 2 nights in AMS

How do we go to Centraal Station in Amsterdam, from Novotel, to catch the train to Brussels? We will have luggage with us too.

Can we deposit our luggage at the station in early morning, then go to Anne Franke House and return to take the train to Brussels? We want to leave latest by 11 am or so, from Amsterdam.

Travel Tips for Amsterdam

Riding a Bike in Amsterdam

by jamescurran

By far the best thing you can do in Amsterdam is to rent a bike, preferably from Bike City, and just ride around the city. There are approx, 350,000 bicycles in Amsterdam for a population of 750,000. That should tell you something right there. At these bike shops they give you a three speed bike and a lock. Just riding the bikes and stopping at a pub for a beer.

Rent a bicycle. That'll make you happy and feel free! It will help you move around easily, but it's a bit scary as the amsterdamers drive like mad (no trafic rules, eh?), and also because the trams don't make much sound, but it's so nice to visit a market, swish-swich, you are somewhere else, you could do just what you feel like, without any planning, and see a lot of the city on the move and stop where you want.
Note! If you're not used to go by bicycle in a city center, better walk or take the tram instead!

by miromi

I guess it would be 'do drugs', but I did no drugs at all. In fact, I didn't even drink while I was there. This was all due not to my self control but more to my horrible lung infection and exhaustion from being at the end of my first trip to Europe. You should never, ever take someone else's antibiotics, even if they're really nice, and even if it does make you feel temporarily better... trust me, that decision will haunt you! Stepping out into the city from the train station--it was truly a magical moment! All the buskers and floods of people and little candyspun buildings are like something out of a children's storybook. I was especially enchanted because I was a little depressed, but the beauty of the city helped restore my mood!

Free Internet at the Bibliotheek

by Mariajoy

The library on Prinsengracht 587 (not far from the Leidseplein) is open on Sundays and has free internet access for half an hour per day. There is also a nice cafe where you can sit and write your postcards with your coffee.

Amsterdam Public Library Friendly library receptionists who, when asked if you can have an extension on your internet time say "yes.. I shall just pretend I don't know you" :))

Montelbaantoren

by MATIM

The Montelbaanstoren is also called “Malle Jaap” (silly Jack) because the clock always gave the wrong time.
This tower dates from 1512 and was placed at the Oudeschans, as a part of a defence work against the attacks of the Geldersen.
The design is from Hendrik de Keyser, famous architect from the Zuiderkerk.
The wooden top came later (1606).
The meaning of the name Montelbaan is a subject of discussion. Some people think the Montelbaan point to the old and very strong castle Montauban in Guyenne, France, there are also people who think that once there was a house with the name “Montelbaan”.
Since 1878 the citywater office is housed in the tower.
