 | | | | Hotel Hestia: Squeeze Yourself In! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
One year, we arrived to Amsterdam two days after Christmas and without a hotel reservation. We mistakenly thought the period between Christmas and New Year would not be too busy, we were wrong. The tourist office found us a few hotels with outrageously rate and we had no choice but accepted one, the least expensive one. Hotel Hestia is a three-star hotel located in the Museum Quarter on a quiet street one block southeast of Marriott Hotel. Our double room is the smallest room I have ever stayed in, even smaller than most single rooms. The front door cannot be opened fully for it ends at the side of the bed. The bathroom door is behind the front door, thus both cannot be opened at the same time. The space between the foot of the bed and the desk is 12 inches, and less than that between the bed and the small armoire. There is no space on either side of the bed; it is squeezed tight between the wall and the radiator. The bathroom is microscopic; there is no need to step from the W.C to the sink or the shower stall. There is no room for towel rack; we hung the towels over the door. Looking at the hotel's website later on, I could not recognise the spacious rooms shown. The website indicates there are three different sizes for double room: twin small, twin medium, and twin big. Our room must be the not-shown twin small. We paid €98 for that minuscule space.
Our room has a view of rooftops (not bad actually) with a street beyond it. The breakfast room's view is the hotel's backyard. Every morning, a pair of beautiful wild cockatiels perched on the birdfeeder pecking at the seeds while we all watched in fascination. | | | | Art Gallery Hotel: Friendly little hotel on Weteringschans Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
We have stayed at the Art Gallery Hotel several times (so called because it is opposite the Rijksmuseum). It is very centrally situated on Weteringschans - just off the Leidseplein. The rooms are clean and comfortable with ensuite facilities. (If you get to know the staff -they might upgrade your room for you :)) The double/twin rooms at the front of the building are light bright and airy and have a little balcony where you can relax and watch the Amsterdammers go by on their bikes. The hotel is run by Ed and Ed and they are very friendly and helpful and are happy to make bookings and reservations for you. (They keep a huge bowl of jelly beans on the counter too! :) The breakfast room is at basement level and is small but nicely furnished. Breakfast is substantial continental fare, bread, cereal, cheese, ham, fruit, juice, tomatoes and cucumber - and, best of all - Mohammed makes a lovely HUGE omlette every morning. Bring your own t-bags though, continental tea-bags are not so strong as those in the UK. The stairs are VERY steep and VERY narrow -no fun when you are lugging bags and rucksacks etc up them after a long days traveling - but just smile nicely and someone might just carry them for you!!!! The walls are a little thin - so bear this in mind when you are giggling hysterically over nothing! You might get a short fat German businessman knocking on the door in a fluffy white bath robe asking you to keep the noise down!
If you ask Ed (or whoever is on reception) for the key to the terrace, you can sit out and enjoy the lovely views over Amsteram from the roof top. It is VERY central and soo convenient for canal boat tours, bike hire, Leidseplein and the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseums. I am planning to stay here for a 5th time so that speaks for itself really!! | | | | Hotel Paganini: Close to Leidseplein | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
This hotel just opened in January 2005, and they really need some suggestions for improvement. It's small and clean, there is no lift and lots of narrow steps. The breakfast room is large and they offer eggs, meat, breads, jam, juices, tea, coffee, and cereal. If you are TALL, don't stay here...the beds are very small and uncomfortable. There are no towel racks or hooks in the tiny bathroom, which is a pain. The phones did not work so that you can call out and the credit card machine was "broken". I've heard that many small hotels in Amsterdam try to get you to pay cash so that you they don't have to pay a commission. We refused to pay cash and he took credit card information to charge when the machine was fixed.
The only good thing was.....it is clean and close to Leidseplein! Leave a Comment Theme: HotelPrice: US$80-120 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Stadhouderskade 68Directions: Tram 24 or 16 between Heineken Experience and Rijksmuseum

 | | | | Hotel Amsterdam De Roode Leeuw: Three Stars in the Old West Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
When we arrived at the Hotel Amsterdam we were a bit unsure that we had made the right decision to choose this place as we had always had such a good stay at our usual place. The other downside was that it was a little further out of the centre than we are used to but the walk did us good :)) There were a couple of plus points though - this place had a lift built by the lift manufacturer *Schindler* - (Schindler's Lift - just a little Maria and Petra joke that had us giggling stupidly everytime we got in it) and internet access (our regular Amsterdam hotel had neither - but the staff were friendlier - guess you can't have everything!) The room was nice and clean and had tv, hairdrier, all the usual hotel room stuff - including a fridge and French windows opening onto a small balcony. Breakfast was the usual continental affair, rolls, hardboiled eggs, cheese, cold meat, yogurt, juice, cereal, tea, coffee, small fruit cakes etc etc. The woman from reception would sit there every morning - watching the guests - I don't know what she thought we were going to do... steal the fruit for our lunch or something... but I was amazed at how she managed to be so glammed up for the day in 6 inch heels and chignon hair at 8am in the morning! And she really didn't like us... we were waiting for our taxi to take us to the station and there was no friendly goodbye... just a straight faced...*the taxi is coming!*. There was another couple also waiting and she was smiling and gushing effusively *Oh I hope you enjoyed your stay...do come back and visit us soon and have a safe trip*. Given a choice - I would probably stay somewhere else next time.
It has a lift!!! Leave a Comment Theme: HotelPrice: US$80-120 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Tweede HelmersstraatDirections: Between the Old West and Museum DistrictWebsite: http://www.amsterdamby.com/damsterdam/pages/booking.htm Map: Hotel Amsterdam De Roode Leeuw

 | | | | Winston Hotel: Good for tourists | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I stayed at the Winston upon recommendation of some locals who advised of it's proximity to Amsterdam's nightlife. Indeed, it was one block from the Red Light District. You could walk out the lobby and within one block find yourself amidst the seductive doorways of the Red Light District, in three minutes you found yourself in Dam Square, and in 7 in Centraal Station. Winston Hotel is good for a tourist who is not traveling on business and doesn't mind simple, raw accomodations. I use the word "raw" for a reason. As in raw materials. Rooms don't come equipped with private phones, so you have to use the pay phone in the lobby which is 2 euros for a 5 minute call to a local cell phone. Nor do rooms come automatically with a remote for the TV's, but with 20 euro deposit, they will give you a remote. If you don't have an adapter for the electric outlets, a 10 euro deposit will fetch you one. Beyond these limitations however, the stay was enjoyable. The staff was ALWAYS friendly and willing to help with navigating the streets of Amsterdam as well as assist in answering any other questions. I can't say one bad thing about the service I received in the 7 nights I was there. I know others may disagree, but my room was clean and served me well for my purpose in Amsterdam. I wasn't there to spend time in the hotel like I would in a beach resort in Mexico, I was there to spend time exploring the canals, the cobblestone streets, and sidewalk cafes of Amsterdam. Winston also includes a breakfast from 8-10 am sharp every morning. Don't show up 10 minutes after 10 though, I said "sharp" and they don't hesistate to close the doors to the buffet right at 10. Corn flakes, rolls, individually wrapped liverwurst, various jellies, butter, cheeses, salami's, coffee, orange juice, and brown hard boiled eggs were served every morning--all you can eat too. I'd say the primary clientelle was between 20-30 years old, but there were plenty of older 50's and 40's spotted too. See Winston Hotel pics for more info.
Damrak is to Amsterdam what Broaway is to Times Square. This hotel is one block from Damrak and one block from the Red Light District but still SAFE for the solitary traveler. | | | | Lilly Houseboat: Weekend on a Woonboot | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
At very short notice I was looking for accommodation in Amsterdam and the Lilly Houseboat came up on a search. After several previous visits staying in hotels, I had always wanted to stay on a houseboat and I booked this fantastic accommodation through Lovingamsterdam. It was excellent value for money with central heating, two bedrooms (a double and a twin bunk), Kitchen (inc microwave, dishwasher etc etc) and living room area with TV, CD player etc etc, and of course a shower room with a lovely hot power shower!!. Everything is spotlessly clean, modern and well maintained and there are dozens of other things included, plug adaptors, hairdrier, towels, - the list is endless.. you will find all kinds of things available, including some food stuffs too! Just remember to leave it exactly as you found it (otherwise your credit card will be charged!). The boat is situated on a quiet residential canalside with good access to nearby public transport (you can see and hear the trams on the opposite side of the canal) There is a lovely outside deck area where you can watch canal life (mostly in duck form!!) while sitting with your morning coffee :))
It's a houseboat! It ROCKS! (when you least expect it!!!) That dizziness isn't the after effects of the night before - it's a boat on water and sometimes the motion is much stronger than you expect. They look completely stable from the water's edge - but sometimes the light swings and your drinks ripple!
