Marriott Amsterdam: Not All Bad, but Not Great    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • While the Marriott was a reasonably good deal on two weeks notice during the height of tourist season in July (149 euros per night, AAA rate, though they didn't ask for proof when I checked in), I must add that the hotel could use some serious housekeeping attention.

    Two main issues:
    1) The bathroom smelled like wet towels left for three days on the bottom of a hamper. Ugh. Would have asked to change rooms, but I had already unpacked and just didn't want to waste any of the very few hours I would be in town.

    2) The sliding glass doors and small balcony with a nice view would have been lovely, but the glass doors were filthy!

Otherwise, it’s a nice hotel, with large rooms and a comfy bed, and well located. It's just across the street and canal from Leidseplein, one of the major squares in Amsterdam full of cafés, shops, street performers and late night life, and only half a kilometer from the Museumplein where you’ll find the Van Gogh, Stedelijk and Rijksmuseums.

Concierge, desk and all other service people were friendly and helpful.

The décor, including the bathroom, is closer to 3 star than 4. Wireless broadband costs 19 euros per day – ouch!

Their buffet breakfast is overpriced at 24 euros. On the other hand, they have a free coffee station in the lobby (one of those wonderful machines that grinds the beans fresh for each cup). There's a hot water pot and instant coffee or tea in your room.

Since I don’t eat a big breakfast, I simply took two cups of free coffee from the lobby, and ordered the 6 euro basket of breakfast rolls from room service. It was more than enough for one person.

During my week in Amsterdam I stayed the main duration of the trip at a hostel called Meeting Point. This hostel was perfect in that it was right a relaxed hostel in the heart of the Red Light district. All I had to do was sit on my bed (which I pulled up to where the balcony was) and watch the people go by. Endless amounts of entertainement passed by: fights, beggars, drug dealers.....it was perpetual!

The actual accomodation was fine, great considering where we were located. I would go back and stay there again if I returned to Amsterdam.

There was a pool table and bar on the main level of the hostel's premises. The hostel wasn't pretty itself but the staff were nice and the location was close to the city centre.

So you want to stay in the heart of Amsterdam, but still want to be able to get a good night sleep...I'd say book a room at the Swisshotel. It's right on Dam Square, and our room faced the square, but we couldn't hear a thing from the outside world. We were upgraded to a suite when we arrived, so we certainly had a great first impression. It doesn't have what you'd call a large lobby, it's actually quite small, but the rooms are gorgeous.

Location, Location, Location! It's great being able to run back to the hotel to "freshen up" every couple of hours, without having to hop on a bus or taxi.

I have to say it is definitally another unique aspect of Amsterdam. Overall the "Botel" was not bad...not good either...However, most hotels in Amsterdam are not cheap, and this place was rather reasonable. The location was very close to the train station (just walk out and go left) The rooms were very small and fairly clean. The staff was friendly and tried to be helpful. Although not too close to the major attractions, it was close to all the major bus/metro lines. It was okay, but next time I will try to look for something else. But, I don't know if I'll find anything with okay location for this price.

    It's a Botel...need I say more

Staying in Amsterdam centre has - of course - it's charmes. Everything at the doorstep of the hotellobby, well, that of course also meets it’s price. By the way, make sure if the accommodation is in a place that you want it yourself, otherwise the surprise can be pretty big when you walk through a certain top attraction and (in)famous area and find out that your cheap hotel or the youth-hostel is besides a series of red aluminated windows with very friendly smiling ladies (also offering a bed to you).

    Breakfast included for
    Hotel, not apartments

We have been to Amsterdam four times and they have each included a stay at the Hoksbergen. A good location (301 Singel) , not too close to the heavy tourist area, yet centrally located, AND on a canal. Close to Dam Square, the Jordaan, and the Leidsplien. Also close to the Floating Flower Market, Cafe Luxemborg.
The second floor rooms with the canal view are prime. The two of them are a little larger and closer to the ground (no elevator) . In 2002 they had aquired some apartments for rental. Go down in "accommodation tips".

Hostel Stayokay Amsterdam Stadsdoelen: One of the best in Amsterdam
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is another of the Stayokay Hostels of the Netherlands, and part of Hosteling International. As with the Vondelpark hostel, the rooms are clean and well-kept. It is located at Kloveniersburgwal 97, a short distance from Rembrandt's House, the Zuider Kerk, and not far from the Red Light District, Rembrandt Plein, and Centraal Station (about 20 min. by foot).

The rooms are quite large and comfortable. They are all in the 6 bed variety. The area is quiet and lovely. The staff are most friendly and well-informed. You need to be a member of Hosteling International and have a membership card.

I have stayed at about 20 of the hostels that are part of Hosteling International, and have yet to be disappointed. They are generally not the party hostels that some people desire, but they are comfortable, safe, and very well administered. This is another of the 5 star hostels on my list.

Comfortable and in a very good location in a quiet neighborhood that is very convenient to sights in the area.

Hostel Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark: Another great Stayokay hostel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Part of the Stayokay hostels (part of Hosteling International so you need an ID card), this is one of the very largest hostels in Amsterdam. Located at Zandpad 5, it is convenient to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Leidseplein. Tram service is convenient. It is a little hard to find, but if you ask the tram personnel, they will guide you. Basically, if you are standing facing the entrance to Vondelspark, there is a small alley immediately to the right of the park. Just go down the alley about 2 blocks and you will be in front to the hostel.

There are different sized rooms from singles to large dorms and all have ensuite facilities. The rooms are clean, large and comfortable, the staff is friendly and helpful. You must rent sheets. This is NOT a real "party hostel" like some others, but It is certainly more quiet if you like the idea of being able to sleep. For a hostel, it gets 5 stars from me.

Beautiful location withing a few feet of one of the prettiest parks in Amsterdam. There is bike rental in the area, as well as museums and the "most happening" square in Amsterdam.

    Hotel Bema: Hotel Bema
  • Tip Rating:
  • We stayed in a small inexpensive hotel - Hotel Bema - near Rijksmuseum. The price for a room was 65 Euros per night and I would recommend this place. The rooms were a reasonable size, clean, though toilet and shower facilities were shared. The price included breakfast each morning and we also had a TV in the room. The area was safe, though it was a bit of a walk from the centre.

Hotel de Filosoof: Something a bit different
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a charming, quiet hotel close to the Vondelpark. Our room was one of two that opened on to a small garden, so we had our own private terrace. The room was spacious, clean and quiet, with good en-suite facilities. Breakfast was served in the main hotel on the other side of the street and was self-service continental, we enjoyed it. There was also a bar.

The hotel is part of an old town house, so the staircases can be steep and narrow, although lifts are available - if you have mobility problems, staff will be happy to find a room for you that is accessible.

The hotel is about a 10 - 15 minute walk from Leidesplein so may be a little far from the action for some, but there are plenty of good restaurants around the area, and decent transport links if you don't want to walk into town. It's also not too far from the museum quarter. We loved it, and would stay there again.

It is quite unique, with each room being styled according to the themes of a particular philosopher or ideal. We stayed in the Sappho room, which was decorated with roses, cherubs and paintings of classical women. The theme is carried on through the dining room and bar. The hotel is run by a Philosophy graduate, who hosts monthly philosophy meetings (in Dutch) at the hotel. It's certainly not like anywhere I've stayed before!
