The Banks Mansion: You can Bank on It

    by

“But New Amsterdam remained comparatively intact. The tongues of nearly every European nation were heard in the place, thus increasing its resemblance to old Amsterdam. There, as here, by hospitality to strangers the Dutch character was not in the least impaired.”
    — from “Annual report of the American Historical Association” 1911

HOSPITALITY TO SPARE As we discovered at our fabulous hotel, the Banks Mansion, over hundreds of years nothing has changed about the Dutch welcoming spirit. Talk about hospitality: all items in our room’s mini-bar were free and replenished daily! Throughout the day, refreshments, ranging from soft drinks and coffee to cookies and candy, were available in the hotel lobby for free.

The staff was helpful and friendly, always greeting us with a smile and a cheerful hello, in English. Everyone we met in the Netherlands spoke English very well. The breakfast, served in its basement breakfast room, was first class. Omelets are made to order and very good. Pancakes too are made fresh to your request.

To become the Banks Mansion, the building underwent a major renovation in 2004, resulting a light-filled lobby (see photo #5). This hotel is a member of the Carlton Group of hotels.

After our long journey from Nieuw Amsterdam to Oude Amsterdam the comfortable bed offered a good night’s sleep.

Our view (see photo #4) of the Herengracht from our room’s windows was lovely. Herengracht, heren meaning lords and gracht meaning canal, is one of the three major residential canals of 17th-century Amsterdam. Our room was small; but with the view helped give it a more spacious feel.

Unique Quality: Free stuff in the room’s mini-bar; as well as free refreshments served throughout the day in the lobby.

Directions: On the Golden Bend of the Herengracht.

    Gem of a hotel

Stayed at Banks Mansion for a business trip a couple weeks ago. Very nice hotel with very attentive staff. Safe and just minutes from the train station. Nice breakfast and always an open bar with snacks in the quaint lobby. Room was extremely clean and had a nice work area/desk with wireless connection.

    Home Away From Home.

    by

This was an absolutely great place to stay. With only 50 rooms, this is truly an intimate cozy place to stay. The service was wonderful and we were constantly asked if everything was okay. The location was great. A two minute walk to the centre of town. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone except those with small children.

Unique Quality: The hotel is right on the Herengracht canal. They have a room off the lobby which is called the Living. There are comfy chairs and sofas, lots of reading material and a fireplace that is on constantly. There is also a great bar area with cold drinks, coffee, tea and even wine and champagne and assorted alcohol, which is all complimentary. It was so nice to come in after a mornings shopping to sit down and have coffee and pastry without paying. There are also two computors, which are available without cost to check e-mail etc.

Directions: A five minute walk from the flower market.

    A Taste of Amsterdam Luxury

    by

The Banks Mansion is well situated on the Herengracht-the first inner canal in Amsterdam. It is an old merchants house that has been converted into a lovely Art Deco style hotel.
It is well situated near to Rembrandt plein, one the main squares of Amsterdam as well as Kalverstraat which is one of the main shopping streets in that city. You are also only a ten minute walk to Leidseplein where there are loads of restaurants and bars. What more could you want??
Also for us gay folk The Banks is only around the corner from Regulierswardstraat which has a lot of great gay bars such as Soho and Exit!

Unique Quality: The Banks sells itself as a Home from home. Once you have paid for your room all drinks and food supplied by the hotel are included by the hotel. Yes that is right-everything!!
They have a lovely breakfast room on the lower floor which has both hot and cold buffet items as well as juices and hot drinks. We used to eat well in the morning and apart from a snack, this would be enough until dinner later that night. This is a big saving in itself.
In the lobby there are two internet access points which are always on and always free for guests. Also there is a self service bar wheer you can help yourself to coffee and tea as well as beer, brandy, whiskey, baileys and so on. There are snacks put out during the day such as biscuits in the morning and dips in the evening. All these things are free.
What is great about this is that you can meet your friends before going out and have a couple of drinks together for Free.
Also there are drinks available when you come home later.
My friends room had a bath while I had a shower but my shower was more like a steam room as it had a steam facility complete with eucalptus oil in the steamer.
There was also a cd player- you had to go to reception to choose the cds- and a flat screen tv with channels in many languages. You could also order adult movies if that was your thing.
The staff were all very helpful without exception. I would have to heartily recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of treating themselves when in Amsterdam.

Centrally located hotel on a canal

    by

The hotel is perfectly located for navigating Amsterdam. Its location on the Herengracht was lovely. It's a charming area...with the Rembrantplein only a few minutes away which meant there were restaurants galore to choose from.

Unique Quality: Room size was rather good for a European hotel. I've often had much smaller rooms...not that I care all that much. Hotel was clean and the staff friendly. And...it had a PC in the lobby with free Internet access!!!

Best service ever received !!

by A TripAdvisor Member

I have stayed already a few times in Banks Mansion and every time the service was excellent. The concept that you can take your own drink in the lobby and in your room makes you feel very welcoming. Rooms are designed beautifully and the rain shower is fabulous. The people how work in Banks Mansion are young but very passionate about their jobs that is very exceptional now a day’s. I cannot think about anything negative about this property. If you are looking for a classical, boring hotel I will suggest do NOT book Banks Mansion because they are definitely the hottest place in town.

Excellent hotel

by TripAdvisor Member oneanne

My boyfriend and I were quite dubious when booking our stay at the Banks Mansion after reading some very negative reviews on tripadvisor. However, our stay was excellent. We had a lovely room - slightly on the small side but the bathroom was lovely and the decor was nice. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the free bar was well stocked until 2:30am! I would definitely recommend this hotel to those who want a good quality hotel in an excellent location.

Just Wonderful

by TripAdvisor Member R1andR2

The Banks Mansion was just great. We will definitely stay there the next time we are in Amsterdam. The rooms were very nice, large and clean, the staff was great, the complimentary extras first rate, the location everything we wanted. There is nothing I could say that would detract from either a business or pleasure traveler from staying there.

Fun hotel for a night.

by TripAdvisor Member DosChicos

We had a hard time finding a hotel room for a Saturday night stay but found one at Banks Mansion. It was a bit more than we would have liked to have spent, but we figured the location was good and free bar would help make up for it. While it isn't a grand old hotel, we had a great time and would look into going back. The mini bar, movie channels and breakfast made just hanging out in the hotel fun and it was certainly better than some of the more basic hotel options.

Great weekend - Feb 05

Good hotel, good location.

A bit worried about our room on 1st impression (smallish, ground floor, on street) but v comfortable and no problem from street noise.

The concept here from the operators is clearly to spend cash on the decor, fittings etc and chuck in things like free room drinks and bar but save on the staffing; usually there was one receptionsist who doubled up making sure the bar was stocked with drinks and nibbles, and a guy who came round clearing up empty glasses etc and that's all the 'front of house' staff there were. Plus no restaurant apart from breakfast.

I think on the whole it works, although it is dependent on the quality of what staff there are. One receptionist was very pleasant and helpful, the other less so, although both very knowledgeable, and you should definitely go to the Dutch restaurant they recommend round the corner. Mustard soup - fantastic!

I would definitely go again.

A GREAT CITY!

"CITY AND HOTELS IN GENERAL"

My first visit to Amsterdam. Didn't know quite what to expect but I found it very clean, the people extremely friendly, all spoke English. Shopping and hotels extremely reasonable. We stayed at the Banks Mansion, located on one of the main canals. We got more than expected. Although the room was a little small and dimly lit we loved it. There was snacks and a self service bar in the lobby, free of charge, 24 hours. A choice of liquor in our room at no charge. A lovely breakfast was provided each morning in their "kitchen". Employees were nice and helpful even providing and shipping a box home for us. They have several computers set up in the lobby for use at no charge. Definately recommend this place! Also convenient to walk just about everywhere - but wear good shoes! We got lost everytime we ventured out! The roads seem to run in circles. And when asking directions don't tell them your hotel is on the canal - there are 167 canals!
