Any free museums or days that they are discounted.

by rickd11

Traveling with five people and looking to save some money. Any suggestions?

Re: Any free museums or days that they are discounted.

Hello,

Some suggestions:

-The Vrolik museum of medical curiosities, not for the faint hearted...
-The free 3 hour guided walking tour

See my Amsterdam pages for more info, including some suggestions for walks that you can do around Amsterdam:

Free (or gratis) has its limits. GRATIS will be used to lure into a shop or business, but ..... Well, just use your common sense.

We found the Museumkaart to be a good investment.

Pay for all public transport amd all museums (with a few discounted exceptions) with a 1 2 or 3 day pass I Amsterdam card www.iamsterdam.com. Neat!

If you'd like to venture outside Amsterdam, then visit Rotterdam. The Boijmans van Beuningen museum (a major Dutch museum) has free entry on Wednesdays.

(I would like to add the fast flying ferry to IJmuiden behind the Central Station to that, not free but cheap and fun: http://www.connexxion.nl/fast_flying_ferry_-english/556/)

Travel Tips for Amsterdam

Walk around and see...

by Aphrodite21

Walk around and see everything!! This city has got such a great atmosphere, I just loved it. You can do what I did. Get yourself a big bag of fries with lots of mayo at a snack bar and wander around the city looking at everything and just experiencing it. My fondest memory is just coming here with a few of my friends and having the absolute best time.

Beautiful old area of town.

by crazygal59

This area of the city is very nice. There are a lot of old homes dating back to the 14 and 15 hundreds. Also a good flea market where everything from clothes to art items and antiques can be found. There are also some nice coffee shops. This is a very nice place to walk on a Sunday. When I'm away from Amsterdam I miss most the feeling of really being a cosmopolitan European. Sitting at an outdoor cafe in the afternoon sun and sipping a glass of wine and watching the people stroll by. Anything goes in this city and you never know what you will see. Amsterdam.......never dull!

I really enjoyed seeing Anne...

by tfogal

I really enjoyed seeing Anne Frank's hideaway house. It really makes the war real, how all of those people were dragged to camps and killed. Just terrible! But the house and story were wonderful story of how people's hearts work together. All of the shops and stores close around 6-8 pm. They close up so they can go home and spend time with their families. I think this is great!! Especially when I come home and see 24 hour stores that people are working long hours in when they should be home putting their children to bed or resting and relaxing.

A walk through De Pijp

by ATLC

De Pijp (the Pipe) is a very different and attractive neighbourhood in central Amsterdam. Located just southeast of the inner city and can be reached by tram 4 or 25 (stop Ceintuurbaan), near to where the walk starts. Because I was staying in De Pijp, I sort of missed out on the first part of the walk and started on Diamantstraat (see map).

Houseboats :-)

by chancay

there are 2000 houseboats on the canals :-)

all over the city you find these houseboats on the canals. The Amnsterdam government had to limit the number of allowed houseboats because of shortage of place.
