Good location

This hotel was in a great location, the room was nice, although there are a lot of stairs, if you don't like that, I would suggest you ask for a room on one of the lower floors.

I would stay here again.

Amsterdam

Myself and some friends are planning on going to Amsterdam in January. We are flying into Brussels. Would anyone be able to help us and tell us how to get from Brussels to Amsterdam and maybe recommend some hostels or cheap hotels to stay in when we are there

You can take a train from the basement of the brussels airport to AMSTERDAM CS(central station) which will put you right downtown. I think it was about an hour ride. As for accomidations I stayed in a cheap but nice hotel in rembrantplein named city hotel. The whole operation runs out of the bar and it's open later than any others in town. Check www.hotels.nl for reservations.

Hi !
You arrive at Brussels-National Airport or
Brussels-South Charleroi Airport ?

From Brussels-National you can take a train all 20 minutes
to trains stations Bruxelles-Nord, Central and Midi.
Here you can take trains to Amsterdam(IC and Thalys).
From Brussels-South you can take a shuttlebus to
Brussels. Or you take a train from station Charleroi-Sud
to Brussels and take another train(see above) to Amsterdam.
www.b-rail.be for timetables and fares.

As Ops7 says, train to Central Station is your best bet. From there the heart of Amsterdam is in front of you. It's not huge so a taxi ride to your hotel shouldn't be very expensive. But the metro line and the trolleys are nearby if you prefer.
The City Hotel that I remember is very close to Central Station but not to RembrandtPlein http://amsterdam.city-hotel-amsterdam.tobook.com/Netherlands/Hotels/City-Hotel-Amsterdam
If your travelling light you can walk to it.
The RembrandtPlein and the Thorbekeplein are lively squares with many restaurants, clubs and entertainers. We stayed in a little hotel there called the Veteran Hotel/Hostel. It's right on the Herengracht Canal and the Thorbekeplein. It's typical of some canal houses that haven't held up well, with uneven floors, narrow stairs, sagging ceilings. A very nice Indonesian couple own and run it. If all you are looking for is a clean place to sleep with good access to all of Amsterdam, it might suit you. We would definitely stay there again, but we have friends who definitely wouldn't.

Your right Ops7, I remember that one, but never noticed the name. Looked quite nice from the outside and very well located.

A train ride is the easiest way to travel to Amsterdam.
From the Amsterdam Central Train station it's not more than a 15 minute walk to most hostels/hotels.

You'll find all the hostel/cheap hotel links at my Amsterdam/hotel page at: http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/2f01c/71211/3/
