This weekend is National Monuments Day in the whole country, which means that many listed buildings (normally closed to public) are open for free visits.

Of course, the choice in Amsterdam is too great. You may want to drop by the Tourist Office. Or give us a little more information on what you find interesting.

Also see the events at:

You simply choose the dates and event category.

Travel Tips for Amsterdam

Amsterdam Airport/Train to the City

by IzzyTroy

If you have at least 5 hours of lay over at the airport, it will be an experience to go and visit the city of Amsterdam. Baggages can be stored at the lower level of 1 and 2 departure area.
Choose a locker of the size you like, they have big ones to fit 2 normal size luggages. Pay 7 Euros, lock the door of the locker and the ticket will come out. Be sure to keep the ticket, the bar code in the ticket upon scanning to the light will open the locker. Purchase a train ticket at the amsterdam terminal through the ticketing counter. Avoid the booth ticketing, you might a get wrong ticket and changing it to the ticketing counter might be a little bit disappointing. They will replace your ticket but with facial attitude. As an excited, tired passenger and trying to do it fast in the ticketing booth is actually a big mistake. Tourists make mistakes and I am sure these people knew it. A bad facial attitude make it worst. Train schedule is all day, night and early morning. We left the city to the airport at 3:30 AM and took us only 15 minutes.

On the water

by Moon11

It may sound corny but if you have never been to Amsterdam or only have limited time do take a canaltrip. Amsterdam from the water is Amsterdam at its best.
See 'off the beaten track' for a real tip! Watching the sun rise over the 'IJ' after a night on the town on the ferry between central station and the north.

Having a drink with friends at one of the many cafe terasses on the 'Nieuwmarkt' in the old center.

Urinals

When it is weekend, these urinals are present. They are standing outside at busy points. On a night out, you drink too much. If you need to go to the toilet, you can use them. These urinals are only for men.

Musea in Amsterdam

by sim1

Amsterdam has some great museums, really worth while going to. I am not such a museum person, but I thouroughly enjoyed my visit to the 'Rijksmuseum' in 2001. And since than I've been back for another visit to the Rijksmuseum and also to the Van Gogh museum.

Here are the links to three well-known musea in Amsterdam :

In these general tips I want to tell you a bit more about these museums.

It's not really a must, but...

by duke0123

It's not really a must, but what a lot of visitors do when they are in Amsterdam is taking a round trip on a canal touring boat.

This round trip can be interesting because you see a lot of highlights of Amsterdam.

There are many companies who offer a round trip in the canals of the city. It's up to you which one you will take.
