Best Hostels in Town
There are so many people staying at this hostel that it's impossible not to have a good time. Maybe this isn't the place to stay if you came to town to go shopping but if you are looking to have a lot of fun anytime of day then you can't go wrong with either Flying Pig location in Amsterdam.

Hostel
This place is a great place for people 16-35 years of age to stay. It is conveniently located within walking distance from the Amsterdam Schipol train station and is near enough to the Red Light District and everything else such as Dam Square, Kalverstraat, Njewendjik et al. The hostel is a great place to party after you return from the party. It is my home away from home.
Unique Quality: This hostel has an outstanding bar and free internet access. It also has a nice bean bag lair where you can smoke whatever you want until your heart is content. The Flying Pig doesn't sell stuff but definately is a supporter of your smoking what you got. There is also a nice pool table and lounge area by the bar. Downstairs the Flying Pig has its breakfast area which is also a T.V. lair which also has an adjoining lounge room with little painted elves all over the walls.

Best Youth Hostel!
Such an amazing and friendly place, I reccommend staying here for a cheap, relaxing time with great staff. There are two Flying Pigs, I was not at the one downtown, but it was still at a great location, walking distance from many things. Great place to meet cool people, highly reccommended for any travelling friends!!!!!
Unique Quality: Inexpensive, varying situations (single rooms, bunk beds, group rooms), wonderful vagabond staff, great bar downstairs, complimentary breakfast

Youth Hostels
There is 2 Flying Pig in Amsterdam.
The one I've been to was the Palace, along Vondelpark.
My friend Anthony went to the one downtown, on Nieuwendijk.
I think my friend's one was better looking than mine ;)
Unique Quality: At the Palace, there was a bar downstairs. We've been greeted there at 11pm and the dorms were mix. But the Downtown one has a female dorm.
It seems they also have double and single rooms...
I thought the healthiness at the Palace was not the best, but I could sleep somewhere. Since I haven't booked anything, it was ok.

maybe the most famous of all hostels
well, it is not the cleanes one, but it is full of crazy young people who are always prepared to party, the atmosfer in hostel is truly good
staff is also very kind
be careful and book in advance because is usually full
don't expect too much from brekfast but i guess one should never exspect too much from hostel's brekfasts (at least from my experience)
Unique Quality: great meeting place of crazy young people

Amsterdam's best hostel
Very popular, inexpensive and co-ed, located in the heart of the city. The atmosphere is relaxed, welcoming and friendly. The main floor is a lounge, with pillows and cushions and blankets spread all over the floor. You can catch some zzzz's, socialize, read, or just somke a nice 'doobie'...
It's great fun!

The Flyin Pig
We had a great stay while at the Flyin Pig. It isnt the cleanest of hostels by far. Bathrooms were kind of discussing, but i found the showers to be great.
Wonderful atmosphere, and you can get double beds if you want a bigger bed, or if you are trveling with a partner. There are a lot nicer places to stay in Amsterdam, but come on its the Flyin Pig, you have to stay there once
Unique Quality: Toilets were bad, but showers were nice and big. Use the ones in the first floor hall way. Lets just say there is enough room for 2 in them.
Also the pool table was nice, and if you arent stoned, you will be the best player in the house.

cheapest of Amsterdam
I have never stayed here but I have looked around inside. The places are central located, best spots of Amsterdam I think. The ceapest places you can get I thing. There are bunk beds or also some small rooms. These hostels fill up very quickly so you should make a reservation in advance.
Unique Quality: Some charateristics:
live dj's thursdays and fridays in the bar, chilled out, cushion lined basement lounge, pool tables, kitchen facilities, basement cafe.

Fliying Pig Palace Hostel
It's the place where I stayed. It was ok, but still not the perfect place one would like to find. If you have the chance, try beach hostel, you may like it better.
The staff is nice but everything is a little disorganised.
One of the guys is not very friendly.
Unique Quality: Pot-smokers hostel, only people less than 40.

The Pig is great!
Stayed 2 nights at the Flying Pig Downtown. The room was a 6 person dorm and luckily the people I was sharing with were very friendly. I can't say much for the bathroom though, it was pretty nasty and I ended up going 3 smelly days without a shower in the sweltering summer heat of August 2003 because of it. Most residents were very friendly, and the hostel is great. They serve the cheapest beer I've seen anywhere in the downtown area! The common area of the lobby is nice... low tables and blankets and pillows all over to sit on. They also have a guitar behind the front desk that you can play if you ask them.
Unique Quality: Interesting decoration throughout the building. Friendly staff. Cheap beer. Good music.

Amsterdam Hostels
I've been looking at Hostels in Amsterdam and I've narrowed it down to the Bulldog and the Flying Pig Downtown.
Both seem to be within the same price range and the facilities seem to be difference so my decision will be based on the opinion of people that stayed there or hearsay...whichever..
Thanks from Miami
RE: Amsterdam Hostels
I'm booked at the Flying Pig Downtown and Flying Pig Palace in June. Everybody who has been to the Bulldog says the staff is really rude, sleep is impossible and even the grass they sell is terrible. Whereas the Flying Pig is always in the Top 10 Hostels in the World polls.
If you're still unsure, go to the Bulldog for a few nights and the Pig the other few.
RE: RE: Amsterdam Hostels
The Bulldog is primarily a "coffee" shop if my memory serves me correctly. From other accounts I've heard, the hostel part is very much self service, and I too have heard of how rude and unhelpful the staff are. Weed isn't too bad there though.
