    Right near everything you need!

This place is a really popular one with young travellers. They have dorms but also double rooms and a great big hangout/ cantina place where you can have meals. It's close to leidsesquare, the museum area and in walking distance of damsquare and the red light district.

Be aware that it can be a bit noisy. But it's a good budget option in the center of Amsterdam.

Directions: Take a tram (1, 2 or 5 from central station) to Leidsestraat, get off at the prinsengracht, from here it's a few minutes walk to the hotel.

    Hans Brinker Hostel

Your typical youth hostel. We stayed in a double room and a six bed dorm. Small rooms and a small locker. Clean and tidy, decent bathrooms. Breakfast was very boring - bread and jam but it was cheap so who's complaining.
There is a bar / disco in the basement.

Hans Brinker Hotel (Hostel is more like it?)

by starduck

A school nearby is planning to organize a trip to Amsterdam and they chose to bring their teenage students to Hans Brinker Hostel. I read a few reviews about the hostel and they were not so nice. Has anyone been there lately? How are the surroundings? Will it be safe for young teenagers to roam around that area at night? I will really appreciate some responses. Thanks.

The area is OK.

The hostel is one with no thrills: low cost and you can have a sleep. Don't expect more.

The Leidseplein is the closest attraction (in the eyes of a teenager) with many many bars, smaller restaurants.

Sounds as if you have concerns about this trip. Perhaps you should speak to the organisers for reassurance?

From reviews here:

and here:

it seems like a perfectly standard European one-star hotel/hostel. Not luxurious by any means, but typical of the type of accommodation school groups often use (mainly to keep parental costs to a minimum). If you google the hotel name plus 'reviews'you can even se a couple of youtube videos.

I doubt any responsible school would allow young teenagers to 'roam around' at night on any school trip, so you need not worry about that aspect....and Amsterdam is a very safe city anyway.

Thank you both for your responses. Yes, I am a bit concerned because it's the first time that I've heard about this hostel. I am a little less anxious now. Thank you so much.

I think the best way to assuage your concerns (although I do not think they are in any way founded)is to speak to the school/organisers of the trip.

Speaking as a teacher myself, I can assure you that the very last thing any teacher would do is put his/her career at risk by not fully researching and planning for the safety of pupils in his/her care during a school trip.
