    basic accomodation

    by

It was really exactly what we expected. A small room, and yes, it did have an odor when we arrived, but the gentleman at the desk came up and opened the window for us which alleviated the problem. There was noise from the street, but we got back so late each night that it didn't faze us much. We were on the 3rd floor up very steep steps, but we always made it. The breakfast we usually got as we were coming home and ate as a late night snack because we weren't up early enough to go down. All in all, it was a decent place and within walking distance to everything.

    Directions: red light district

    Watch out !

    by

I didn't know if putting this hotel in this section or in the
"warning and danger"tip...Pratically we have been DUPED!
We booked a triple room by internet;less than 50euros x night with breakfast.
    We arrived,after a trip of 14hours,at 8pm and...surprise!! The room was an a** h***!!!!!!!!!
They gave us a LITTLE(3X2m!) double room with a mattress more on the ground!!!!!!!!! We couldn't move!!!!!!!! SCANDALOUS.If it had been only for the dimension,we wouldn't have remained so upset..but hey!We payed a triple and they gave us a double(incredible, they haven't neither eliminated the indication on the door!)!!
Now we will organize to get back some money..

Unique Quality: Anyway,SCAM apart, the bath it wasn't so bad;a clean
shower and toilet inside with a NICE FEATURE..I tell
you in roman dialect before:"AR CESSO SE JE RIPROPONE!!!!!!!" ahhah!! Yes yes..you use the WC and, after some minuts,EVERYTHING comes back to
GREET you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-) But I heard that it's a quite common problem there...!
What other could I add?Ahh,yes, steps inside apartments are,as usual for Holland, terribly VERTICAL!

    One positive note!
The Hotel is in the real HEARTH of the Red light District! During the night you can feel the BREATH
of this incredible world! I still have in my mind the CHORUS of a PATROL of completely DRANK English guys that, with a guitar, sang Oasis' songs during the deep nght!!(GREAT GUYS! Gorgeous!Really!)

Directions: Follow the GRASS SMELL,go straight on untill you find
tons of PROSTITUTES work in their shop windows and
then try to ask to one of the hundred of PUHERS along the street......
ehheeheh...easy to find;not more than three minuts from the central station!

Concerto, maybe the best CD shop ever

by aaaarrgh about Concerto, Utrechtsestraat

This shop was recommended by our young-at-heart Amsterdam landlady. It is half way down Utrechtsestraat, 5 minutes from where we stayed. We had discovered a CD player in our boat and wanted to buy some cheap CD's to play. Eventually we were so impressed with the shop we interrupted our sightseeing to visit it again the following day.

Concerto is actually five (maybe six) thin Amsterdam shops knocked into one. The CD's and records are on three half-floors. Every genre of music is covered. Though with the 'pop' you have to accept the Dutch may have different tastes from you. Massive selection of second-hand CD's in the far left-hand building. The prices are ridiculously cheap, often 3 or 5 euros for an album. And we found many good, classic albums to choose from.

There are also a large selection of vinyl records in the basement.

All types of music are available - rock, pop, indie, dance, jazz, classical, folk etc etc

Closes 6pm in the evening, except for Thursday when it is open till 9pm.

AMSTERDAM

by dutch_anna

However I was born in Amsterdam and lived there for many years I just now realize, that I never made a photo of the canals, the towers, the Dam, the flowermarket or the Vondelpark. Maybe it is because I lived there. I knew, that it was very beautiful, but it was so familiar to me. Lately someone said that when a young person gets his first camera he goes to Paris and makes a picture of the Eiffeltower. He knows there are more than a billion pictures of the Eiffeltower, but this is hís first time. He doesn't think of taking a picture of his mom and dad and the cat, because they are so familiar. He still doesn't know that the Eiffeltower will be in Paris long after his mom, dad and the cat are gone. And yes, I made pics of the Eiffeltower and I simply forgot to see Amsterdam with a tourist's eye.
Nevertheless I love this city from the bottom of my heart. Amsterdam, Mokum Aleph, First City. I'll let the many beautiful pages about Amsterdam on VT speak also on behalf of myself. My picture will be a painting of a famous Amsterdam painter: George Breitner (1857-1923).
