Even Dopers Need To Stay Away

I walked in... and had to leave.
I was sooooo looking forward to my time in Amsterdam to puff a little hooch after abstaining for over 15 years (married, professional, etc) so where better to stay than the Hemp Hotel. They don't sell it on the premiss but they have a lot of things made out of hemp which is cool. So I get there after getting sick on the flight and a bit of a confusing ride there.
Now before this, I'd made reservations. I'd made reservations months in advance. I emailed monthly to ensure my room was there. I called a week before coming to make sure my room was there. I arrived and... they'd given my room to someone else. What the heck???? What's wrong with you people? Well, as the woman behind the desk said, "we are the HEMP hotel."
Poor woman. She had her baby laying on the couch, trying to run the bar and she had to reschedule me into another hotel all at the same time. I wasn't making her life any easier. I ended up at place closer to the action and at the same price but better I'd just scheduled somewhere else in the first place. Admin screw-ups like this do nothing to add to the quality of your holiday especially if you're pushed for time.

Unique Quality: Dark, dingy, never did see the rooms. Cool people at the bar. I put a warning on their guest book which was immediately erased and a nasty email sent to me.

Hemp Hotel

fl 135 ($58.00/night in March 2001)

Unique Quality: This is nice home-away-from-home. It isn't a hotel where they come in and clean your room for you everyday...it's like being at home. Each room is decorated differently and interstingly. We were in the 'Tropical Room.' There was a fake Palm tree on my side of the room (two twin beds) and they had painted big blue waves all around the yellow room. The shower was in the room and separated from the other part of the room by big blue curtains. We had a little table to sit at and a large closet/cabinet. The sink was near the door and over top of it they had fish christmas lights. The best decoration, though is the buterflies all over the room...some in clear plastic ornaments that look like bubbles.

It was just a nice simple place to stay. There is a bar downstairs with Hemp Beer on tap. They seem to have a bunch of regulars that stop in every other day or so. The hotel is out of the center and across the street is a nice park-like area (Fredrickplein). We liked the fact that it wasn't in the midst of the touristy areas. Nice people, nice location.

  • Opinion of Price: less expensive than average
