Horeca?
by Dlee
Had a man come in today at work. We where talking about where to stay in Amsterdam. He said a nice clean place is Horeca, something about student hotel? Anyone know what he may have been talking about. lol Thanks

Horeca is the general Dutch name for cafe's, bars and pubs; ergo licenced liquor institutions.
It could be some wise guy named his bar or student house HORECA.
Never heard of it yet.

HORECA = HOtel, REstaurant, CAfé sector (catering industry): in French also, at least as used in Belgium. Sounds to me as though he was talking about the industry in general, not a particular place to stay - as you can easily see if you google horeca amsterdam!

He said it was a place to stay. Student hotel ?

Maybe he meant Hotel Eureka? That sounds like horeca.

by googling, I found this:

perhaps he shortened the name to horeca?

Travel Tips for Amsterdam
Tourist information
by Dabs
Once you exit Centraal Station, you will see an information center right across the street. The line was only a couple of people deep when we stopped by, we asked for a map and were advised it was 2E so we decided to use the maps we had printed out instead which worked fine.
Some very good online information

The city is such a good mix of cultures - as here with this Gaudi-style bench. The styles and people mingle quite well - it's definitely worth wandering around, and not just getting the biased Central Station, coffee shop and Red light district impression.
Zaanse Schans...
by CandS
Make sure you visit Zaanse Schans!!!
It is like an open air museum that has some great typical Dutch places to visit - a cheese making shop, a clog making 'factory', windmills crushing seeds and other great stuff! It's the perfect place for a non Dutch person to visit!! :) Although our Dutch friends enjoyed it too...

Houseboats
by vec
On many canals in Amsterdam you will see houseboats. Some ugly ones, but most of them are very beautiful, giving some daydreaming about having such a home self. But when thinking of it, they must be quite sick of all tourists who always are so curious about their home.
Walk along the Canals and see the Houseboats.
by Paul2001
One of the more attractive aspects of Amsterdam is the array of houseboats. When one thinks of all the canals in Amsterdam and consider the fact that there is actually little in the way of space in the city centre, one should not be surprised that thousands of locals have decided to live on the canals themselves. There are more than 2,400 families now living in these houseboats. They are quite lovely homes and most are located in the more picturesque neighborhoods of Amsterdam. This of course means they are quite expensive to own considering their location along with the expense of maintaining them.
It is possible for tourists to stay on a houseboat during their stay in Amsterdam. Personally I would only recommend this if you are staying Amsterdam for an extensive period as rates are considerably reduced over the time of your stay. There are seemingly countless internet connections to wevsites offering deals for houseboat stays.
