See here for the metro map:

Keep in mind that the public transport system is changing, and that you need a chip-card to use the metro. See the site above for more info.

The Amsterdam metro is much more of a commuter service than a tourist one. All the main attractions are easiest accessed by tram or on foot. The complete public transport map is

As Dennis mentions they are in the process of changing over to a chip card system but I think there are still the various day passes available which can be loaded onto the card - from 24hrs up to 168hrs and so if you intend to use public transport a lot then the 168 hrs pass gives you 7 days of unlimited travel for 29 Euros.

You can get a card from the GBV office in front of Centraal station.

For much of Amsterdam I really don't think you need to use the Metro at all.

It is an extremely walkable city, and the best way to see it is on foot.

Amsterdam Tip

by Kindberg37

One of my best memories comes from the train trip into Amsterdam from Paris. There was a guy named Jason who sat across the aisle from my friend Heidi and I and we all talked on the way there. He was actually sitting next to this rude guy who apparently hated Americans (as he proceeded to tell us how stupid we were as often as possible). When we got to the train station in Amsterdam Jason offered to help us find our hostel, and I must admit we were a little sketchy at first. But he helped us get our money converted and grab a tram to the hostel. It was actually kind of difficult to find, so without him we would have been lost. My only regret is that we didn't think to get a picture with him (I'm a little camera happy when I'm visiting other countries). It would have been wonderful to have a picture.

Celebrating QUEENSDAY on 30...

by Gypsy_Saskia

Celebrating QUEENSDAY on 30 April in Amsterdam is a unique experience. On this day, we celebrate the Queen mother´s birthday (since our Queen's birthday is in cold and rainy January). The Queen herself is in a different part of Holland each year, but there is always a big party in AMS! Be prepared for 1000s of people (at least 700,000 in 2001), most of them (partly) dressed in orange (this is key, without orange no Q-day). They sell things in front of their houses, cruise on the canals in little boats and sing songs because they are either drunk or performers. The Dutch lose their heads, minds, sanity and more!

Very popular areas are the Jordaan (cafes Thijssen and Blaffende Vis) on the night before and the day itself and the Spui and Museumplein on Queensday (live bands). In 2002, QUEEN actually performed on Museumplein, all arranged by Heineken.

And remember, when in Rome.....

de Bazel building (Vijzelstraat 32) - 1926

by yooperprof

The de Bazel building is a classic modernist structure from the 1920s, located in the business center of the city. I like how it is now named after its architect, Karel de Bazel, who actually died in 1923 before the building was completed.

In the manner of other classic architects from about the same time around the world, de Bazel wished to integrate all of the arts in one building. It reminds me of the work of Louis Sullivan in the USA or Otto Wagner in Vienna.

The building was first used as the center for a trade association, later it served as a bank headquarters, and now it is home to the archives of the city of Amsterdam.

Put simply, vla is custard. This is an extremely popular pudding. The most common flavours are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, or a combination of two. However, other unique flavours include bitterkoekjes.
