Sim cards

by FraMauro

I have a GSM mobile which works in the US with a T-mobile card. Is there a sim card which will work in Amsterdam, Paris & Swiss on my phone.

Thanks

If it is an unlocked phone, it will work with any SIM card. I have an unlocked T-mobile phone that I have a Canadian, Icelandic and French SIM card for.

You could check things at you provider's website.

More important question is if Your phone will work with European GSM networks - it is different frequency used - check in the manual.

Re: Sim cards

Good point - you will need a quad-band phone.

North America (and South America) use 850 MHz and 1900 MHz frequencies while Europe is on 800 MHz and 1800 MHz freqencies

Check your manual (if you can't find it, it should be online at your provider's or manufacturer's website). A lot of the higher end phones - Blackberries and iPhones are built this way, as are the newer phones. It reduces the number of items that the manufacturers have to produce.

Travel Tips for Amsterdam

Buy cheaper tickets at the...

by mitchimitch

For cheaper tickets to Madame Tussaud-Dam Square, don't get your tickets from the door. You can save maybe 3-4 EUR if you buy them from one of the canal cruises office near the Centraal Station. Guess it's called the Holland International Cruise....

Getting to know Amsterdam

by Yosemite_44

... start with an extensive tour of the city. You can do this by bike, by boat or by foot. Or you can take the Holland Experience. This is a 30-minute 3D video tour of Holland that you can watch sitting in a airplane seat on a moving platform. I haven't done this my self, but it looks and sounds as a great way to start your trip!

Madame Tussaud's

Meet Freddy Mercury, Marilyn Monroe or even the Dutch Royals! Or just take a photo with you and James Bond or Tina Turner.

Memorials

by CoAir13

While walking, I noticed many sculptures and, unfortunately, I don't know Dutch so I don't know why many of them exist. I was able to ask my "guide", Vince, about this one. It sits across the street from the Heineken Museum at the start of a biking path. It is a memorial to 30 Dutch men killed by Nazi occupiers on this spot in 1945.

Coffeeshops.

by A2002

There are many coffeeshops in Amsterdam. The signs are usually neon lights with a coconut tree and very colourful. These are not places that only sell coffee, but more than that. They have menu for different types of "herbs", such as Cannabis, for you to smoke.
I am a non-smoker, so I did not enter any of the coffeeshop cos the smell from outside already puts me off. I will never forget that strong stench.
