I would call Hotel Aspen more of a guesthouse than a hotel, but this is not a bad thing. It is in a good location, quite central, maybe a 15 minute walk from the Central Station. It is above a row of shops with what looks like 5 or 6 other hotels. There are quite steep stairs to go up when you get in, but its not That bad. The owners house is evidentally on the first floor and there is a window where you check in. Our room was on the next floor up. We chose a room with a private bathroom as opposed to sharing one with other people staying there. We had a great window with window seat that looked over the main street. The room itself was of average size, mostly white, and clean. The beds were two singles (i assume this is because there is no way of getting a double up those stairs!) but we just pushed them together. The pillows were great, quite substantial as opposed to those crappy pillows that you might as well not use that you get in some hotels and the beds were very comfy. The adjoining bathroom was quite big and again, clean. The shower was okay, only gripe would be that water pressure wasnt too good so it wasnt a great stream, but it was enough to do the job. We would happily stay here again, its maybe not the place to stay for a week or two, but for a few nights, its great.
Unique Quality: The owner is a very friendly man who speaks good English. He asked us if we had visited the city before and gave us some advice on where to go and what to see. He was friendly and helpful without being overbearing.
Cheap little Hotel on Raadhuisstraat a real no frills place ,right in the heart of Amsterdam. No breakfast room only but very comfortable ,small shower room and 24 hour access
Unique Quality: slap bang in the middle of Amsterdam close to everything, the steepest staircase i've ever seen so would not really be suitable for the ederly or disabled , wake up in the morning to the sound of trams running outside , so if your looking for a real deal try this little gem
