The sight I see everyday!
by tvdm
As with so many other countries, those who are not from the capital are supposed to show a healthy dose of scepticism towards the mundane city-dwellers. And, of course, those from the capital are supposed to view all others as a lower form of the human species. It's not really very different in Holland. But I must say (not being from here), Amsterdam is growing on me very fast. I'm getting quite smitten with the beautiful canal-vistas and the cosy little corners you find almost anywhere in this town.
In the picture you see the St. Nicolas Church across the water from the Central Station. Through the little canal in the red light district you can spot the outline of the Montelbaanstoren. I pass this quay every day by bus on my way to and from home and it's a nice way of being greeted by Amsterdam upon arrival :) There are a lot of things one can miss when leaving Amsterdam. For me it would be its plethora of hangouts. Food, drink and entertainment are all big business here and nowhere else in Holland you can find such a wealth of it all!

-Anne Frank House The first trip my husband and I went together was Amsterdam, so that right ther makes it something extra special for me. My husband is from the US and that was his first time visiting a major European city.
It was just so much fun seeing him totally amazed about how different everything is compared to the US.
I'm talking about the red light districts, the coffee shops, etc.
But also seeing so much history, like the Anne Frank house. It sent shivers down our spines, knowing that we were actually standing in the place where she had spent some of the best years of her life, hidden away.
Amsterdam is a great place, I promise.
Street Performers

While walking through the streets I encountered several street performers, there was actually a picture of this particular guy in my travel book that I brought from home, it was like meeting a very minor celebrity. It was a very minor thrill.
Take a Canal Boat Tour of Amsterdam
by Paul2001
Take a canal boat tour of the gorgeous city if you can. In fact if you are on a layover at the Airport I would recommend that you hop on a quick train to the city centre and take a canal tour. They are only about two to three hours long and are a great way to become aquainted to this lovely city. There are several stops where your can board the boats through out the city including at the Amstel Train Station. There are also day tickets that you can purchase and use through the day as an alternative means of transportation.
While on the boat a cruise guide will give you information on the various sight that you pass as you snake your way around the canals. They also give you information about the canals themselves and how they periodically flush the water out back into the sea. The canal boat tour of Amsterdam is a photographers dream. Do not forget you camera and bring lots of film on your voyage. There will be lots of photo opportunities.
Great architecture
by acemj
There are obvious architectural challenges to overcome when you consider the below sea level location of Amsterdam, but they've done a terrific job in restoring many of the older structures. As you stroll the city, you're definitely going to be captivated by what's going on at street level and below. The bicycles whizzing by, the attractive people, great shops and beautiful canals will all grab your attention, but be sure to look up and notice the architectural details in the many towers and steeples around the city.
