Hotel Pulitzer - Eating and Drinking

    by

The hotel offers two dining areas, the first informal near the entrance lobby on Prinsengracht and facing the gardens, for informal breakfast, coffee, and lunch. The more prestigious is Keizersgracht 238 with a separate outside entrance. The original French restaurant on premises was converted to an international grill style room in 2009 wih a wide ranging menu at exceptionally reasonable prices for a 5 star hotel ( but still expensive and still hotel food ).

Breakfast was the typical posh 5 star buffet seen all over Europe with excellent pancakes and eggs made to order and and set tables groaning with the goodies available for the taking - pastries, rolls, hot and cold cereal, fish, meat, cheese, yogurt, eggs with bacon and sausage. A surprising disappointment were the obviously prefrozen and inadequately thawed and heated waffles -hard to believe. Everything else appeared made to order. Sorry, no grits, but superb oatmeal. The al a carte breakfast menu is brutally priced, the buffet costs more understandably but may preclude the need for a large lunch. The best deal is to prebook the breakfast buffet as part of the room rate. Service was outstanding.

The bar area is comprised of three rooms ( small, from two adjoining townhouses ), very calm and sedate with subdued lighting and with quiet efficient service from the long well stocked bar ( decent choices of vodka, adequate martini for Europe ). And again relatively reasonable pricing for a prestige hotel. As in the images, a very peaceful place for a late night drink.

Pulitzer Hotel - Living In An Older Classic

    by

A five-star hotel with 230 rooms spread across 25 canal houses fronting on the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht combines the best and worst of being an old classic. Opened in 1970 as a Howard Johnson property (can you believe that ), it was renamed for the owner several years later. It has steadily grown, with the houses on the Keizersgracht added in 1981. After several ownership changes, the Pulitzer is now a Starwoods Hotel.

Service is the hallmark of a 5 star hotel and the Pulitzer does not disappoint. The concierge staff was remarkably patient, understanding, and helpful in every way. Most appealingly, and unlike so many upper tier hotels, restaurant recommendations unfailingly were for relatively modestly priced places with local flavor and not for haute overpriced temples of cuisine. The restaurant staff was by and large friendly and efficient - students in hospitality schools are trained here and it shows. Given the confines of our room, housekeeping was nothing short of amazing, creating order out of chaos on a daily basis. Even the doormen and bellboys were friendly, filled with suggestions for our day. Maybe 6 stars.

But this is an old hotel patched together from disparate buildings. All the public and guest rooms are different, connected by narrow labyrinthine corridors. Some rooms are between levels and require stairs for access, others open onto main walkways. The rooms have been modernized recently but remain very small even for Europe, especially the bathrooms. Ceilings are very low ( although with charming wooden transverse beams ). The almost kingsize bed was very comfortable, but access on either side was narrow, walking space in general was limited, and closet space was small. As the image shows, the bathroom was particularly undersized.

Our small ground level room faced a very pretty indoor garden not in use during our visit because of seven straight days of rain. One evening an affair in a public room across the garden spilled outside and the sound insulation was insufficient. In the summer or during a large outdoor party rooms facing inward have no doubt serious noise issues even on upper levels. More expensive rooms facing outward to the canals are probably quieter. From the professional images on the website, they may also be larger and surely command a higher price.

For those with money to burn, the hotel owns a century old river boat available for 200+Eu per hour for canal tours, internet service as an added expense, and a spa.

Directions: Half block from the westermark tram stop, adjacent the Nine Little Streets, Jordaan, and very near the Anne Frank House.

    Canalside luxury

    by

The Pulitzer is a collection of canal homes that have been remastered into a hotel---yes you do have to walk down a few hallways to get to your room most times, and they all don't have great views, but they are very comfortable and luxurious with all the amenities. The included breakfast is out of this world as is the restaurant and the location could not be better, near the Jordaan, the Spui and the Dam as well as the Anne Frank House and the Westerkerk.
Not inexpensive but possibly worth it for a splurge visit.

Unique Quality: Luxury, canalside, good food

    Hotel Pulitzer

    by

This 5 star "the luxury collection" hotel is right in the city center and 100 meters away from Ann Frank's house.

In the room there are free water, cookie, slippers which are not available in many European hotels.

The building was a very old one and therefore the layout of the room is a bit wierd, but overall it was a good experience

    Directions: Ann Frank's house

  • Very chic and friendly

    by

I have stayed at Pulitzer 2004/2005 new years period for 4 nights. It is a great hotel centrally located walking distance to most of the centers of Amsterdam. Rooms are different from each other so this will make me go and stay there again (change is always good).

Unique Quality: Breakfast is amazing at the other corner of the hotel. For those of you don't know Pulitzer is an island of buildings inside these buildings there is a garden and corridors to connect each building and rooms. There is a nice fireplace at the lobby. You may run in to some celebrities.

If it's good enough for Danny Ocean!

This hotel is quite simply delightful. It is housed in a number of canal houses along the Prinsengrahct.

The rooms are stylish and comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful.

It has a lovely bar with bar stools and comfortable seating.

Unique Quality: Lovely art gallery within the hotel.

    Nice location.

    by

The rooms are large and upscale with very comfortable beds and nicely decorated. Our room faced the Prinsengracht Canal and was on the highest floor. I would request this room again when we return. The area is very nice and we prefer this location much better than being closer to the city center.

    Luxury At It's Best

    by

We had a wonderful stay at The Pulitzer. The hotel is well appointed and in an excellent location. The rooms were spacious and yet warm and the staff were very accomodating. I would certainly recommend the hotel, but not the airport shuttle bus that services it. Much easier to train it to the station and then catch a cab from the Terminal to the hotel.

Unique Quality: The hotel is actually a number of houses joined together in a unique merging of stairwells and corridors. Not your typical Sheraton hotel, it is tastefully decorated.

    Interesting hotel

    by

This hotel is a group of canal houses that have been connected. Great location. Very nice furnishings and the room I had was very large and nicely appointed. Had a very large bath room and a very large tub (even by Europe standards) Staff was very helpful and friendly. Not inexpensive but I would recommend this hotel.

Unique Quality: Charming canal houses form this hotel. God location on canal.
