Great hotel in Red Light District

I stayed at the Hotel the Crown. I read about it in Lonely Planet Guide. Right in the heart of the Red Light District. At the time it was 40 Guilders per night. clean rooms, great staff. Pool table and bar downstairs, lively depending on number of guests. No curfew . I did not need a reservation. Simply walked in, but that was during low season. British owned. Bar open till 5 AM.

Canal Crown

by lindygarrethtyra

Hi all,

Holiday is all booked, and thought I could squeeze in two nights in Amsterdam. What is the Canal Crown Hotel like? Has anyone stayed here and what are the rooms like?

There is a good deal on lastminute.com that includes flight and 2 nights accom but I'm not sure if this hotel is worth it.

Your help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Lindy

There are some mixed reviews at http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g188590-d230616-r1538375-Canal_Crown_Hotel-Amsterdam_Noord_Holland.html

Seems it's a 3-star hotel at an excellent location (all major tourist spots are within a 10 minutes walk)

I was there only once, in 1993. At that time it was a modest hotel, nice, but with small rooms. I know it has been renovated and upgraded afterwards.
For this reason I can comment only about its location, that is good. Close to Rembrandt Square, which is a lively place, and also close to tram stops, so it is very easy to go from there to any place in Amsterdam.
The Dam Square is just a short walk away.
