A great relief finally
by Rupanworld
after all my travels across european countries where I really found it so difficult to communicate with people, Netherlands in general was the first place that i could freely communicate with people. Everybody understands and speaks in English and are proud to say that.
Take a stroll around the city!
by wen_viaggio
The locals are very friendly and helpful whenever it came to asking for directions. Walking around Amsterdam is the best way to take in the sights. Yes, its possible to walk from the city centre all the way to Centraal Station. If you get tired, you can always take their trams which arrive at regular intervals.
Also do check out their many shops which range from the usual souvenir fare
to the sleazier ones like those selling adult toys and xxx videos, mementos.....Definitely an eye opener for people like us Singaporeans where such items are banned in our country.
Left: Clogs of different sizes and colours deck the walls of souvenir shops.
Two places that you must go to...
by dballgame
Two places that you must go to in Amsterdam would be 'The Red Light District' and the 'Hash Bars.' You must realize I was a 26 year-old male in a city with very few inhibitions, with that in mind, I frequented both on various occasions. The red light is unlike anything I have ever seen. Window shows, vendors, tourists, 'regulars.' As for the hemp shops...you can go to the Blarney Stone first thing in the morning, order ham and potatoes with a side of 'white widow.' Like coffee shops in the U.S., these are places where people hang out, eat and talk about current events...oh yeah they smoke hash and marijuana there also. You can look at a book that resembles a catalog with various choises...purple haze, northern lights, and hawaiian to name a few. Simply lovely!
Bicycles
by micas_pt
One of my fondest memories from Amsterdam are the bicycles. There were bicycles all around me! One of the first sights I had when leaving beautiful Centraal Station were countless bicycles parked there. And as I walked through the city I could see so many more bicycles lined on street. And Dutch cycling everywhere, both young and elderly, with or without children, to and from, doing their shopping, just going everywhere by bicycle!! This is something that amazes me as i live in a city that is built on seven hills, … so doing my daily life with a bicycle is something i am not used to. And Amsterdam stands from other cities i’ve visited, as i don’t remember having ever seen so many bicycles in short period of time and a limited area of the city.

by Erkmen
Amsterdam is famous with its canals and a boat tour in the canals is a must do..
However due to on going extensions of the metro line, Canal boats are now leaving from a different place..
So all canal boat companies near the central station is temporarily closed..
