Hotel van Onna

Discreet, delightful and very Dutch

This is a small, family-run hotel consisting of three renovated houses on the Bloemgracht Canal. I came across it as a low-cost recommendation in the Eyewitness guide to the Netherlands and it definitely deserves a review here.

I needed a small, safe hotel as Iwas travelling alone to Amsterdam for a short break and the Van Onna suited all my requirements perfectly. I rang them two days before I arrived and booked a single room. Arriving around 10.00 a.m., I was made very welcome, allowed to check in right away and given a room overlooking the canal. So far, so excellent and it only got better.

Rooms are simple, spartan almost but clean and comfortable. In my room, I would have slept on the floor for access to that view but happily, the bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast is served downstairs - boiled egg, ham cheese, bread and chocolate sprinkles plus tea or coffee. More than I coud eat and the atmosphere in the dining room ( decorated for Christmas), was very pleasing.

I felt very safe in this hotel and the area is absolutely beautiful. I might never again spend so many hours sitting, looking out the window as I spent at Hotel Van Onna, but then not many views are going to be quite so perfect.

If you want someplace quiet, beautiful and very Dutch then Hotel Van Onna on the Bloemgracht could be just what you're lookig for.
