Ibis Amsterdam City West

Although I am usually not too fond of chain hotels, we chose the Ibis Amsterdam City West as our home base for our weekend stay. This was mainly due to a very good deal as well as a relatively good location. The hotel has about 180 rooms.

We booked our room through the Ibis website more than 20 days in advance, so that we got the so called "Happy 20" tarif of 75 Euro per night for a double room without breakfast. This price was even cheaper than on any other hotel booking website.

Our room on the 3rd floor was a typical Ibis style room with a double bed, a desk, a flatscreen TV and a functional bathroom. Free WiFi was available as well. On the downside our safe deposit box was closed on arrival so that I couldn't enter a new code. Also our room didn't have any tea and coffee making facilities.

Still we were quite happy with our choice, as the hotel was quiet and conveniently located.

An Exceptionally Dull Hotel Near Nothing

The Ibis West is located outside the center of the city. You can get a bus to the center, but when you don't know where you are going, and don't speak the language, this is a poor option. A central hotel allows you to wander the area and still not be too far from your base station. This is clearly a better option.

The Ibis chain is noted as a clean business hotel that gives you what you expect, like the Holiday Inn Express. The Ibis, however, in no way measures up to the quality of a Holiday Inn. The Ibis bed was two very small beds on wheels pushed together. Each bed was made up with separate bed sheets and covers so that it was impossible to sleep in it as a larger bed.

The beds were hard, the pillow uncomfortable and too small for a tall person like me. When I put my arm on the second bed, it rolled away. There was a third bed near the window that folds up to give a kind of desk. It too 3 days to get them to close this third bed.

The TV was small, maybe 19 Inch, smaller than my home computer screen. The bar had beer on tap for 5.75 Euro for a large draft, and dinners starting around 15 Euro. The "super buffet" breakfast was actually very small and cost 15 Euro!

I forgot to pack a razor, but they had one available for 2.50 Euro. It was a small cheap plastic 2 blade razor that Chinese hotels provide for free. I cut my face to shreds. The Holiday Inns provide one for free.

The Location was terrible. There were no other hotels, no restaurants and no stores within walking distance. It was near the Metro train, though. The Metro train was convenient for going to the RAI convention center, but not for going to the city center. The Internet was provided by T-Mobile and cost 6 Euro for 60 Min! The TV had no movie channel. The one chair was a metal fold up chair.

A Holiday Inn, by comparison, offers free breakfast, free internet, king size bed, choice of pillow, HBO and or another movie channel, and a proper desk, light and chair.

Unique Quality: None! It was clean, though

A good deal

Located about 5km from central Amsterdam this hotel is a good option if you don't mind staying outside downtown Amsterdam. The neighbourhood is calm and safe. The rooms are clean and the staff is friendly. There is a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and diner. Parking is available outside the hotel.

Unique Quality: Clean rooms and calm neighbourhood.

Ibis Amsterdam Westcorner

When i arrived at the hotel... got a room on the 8th floor with the view were very surprised... thought that i'm in the middle of the industrial area...

Room was clean BUT the smell... like no one opened window for ages...

Not very bad location... 8 min walk from the train station, 2 min from the bus...

good - safe & fairly cheap....

As far as being on the Euro and how un-safe I felt in Amsterdam...this is a great place to stay. If this is the Hotel Ibis that is next to Central Station Amsterdam I would tell everyone & there mother to stay at this hotel.
Rates are pretty good if you have the money to blow, very nice hotel, and in a great location.
