Run away from it !!

Rooms dirty, (bugs in the sheets), sometime without windows. Shower out of order (water may come into the bedroom). Unpleasant staff. Very low value for the price. I surely do not recommend it at all !!

It's not a palace but it's not bad.

This hotel is just up the road from Centraal Station. It takes no more that five minutes to walk there carrying suitcases (I am not particularly fit but it was no problem for me to get there on foot). The hotel is a large original Dutch building on four levels and there is no lift - of course there is no lift the building is about 300 years old, if you want lifts go elsewhere. The climb to the rooms is steep and there are alot of little corridors and steps, if you are not steady on your feet do not go there. However it does make for an interesting and fun experience, you can imagine the building as it was originally and explore the additions and changes that have been made over the years.

The rooms are CLEAN and they DO NOT SMELL. I emphasise this because of all the scare stories on tourist tips that I read before I went (but after I booked, you can imagine my relief when we got there and found that these complaints were not valid at all). The rooms are small, some of them very small but the bedlinen was clean and yes the rooms did need to be redecorated and spruced up, but so would you if you were 300 years old. We also had plenty of towels in the room - something which seems to be important to a lot of people. Our room was on the third floor at the front overlooking the water and was not in the least noisy (something others have complained about). There was no bar/nightclub in the area and so after the rush hour traffic had subsided there was no noise to speak off and nowhere else in the hotel did we find noise a problem.

Breakfast was very substantial and of a continental nature, you could help yourself to as much as you wanted. The staff were very helpful and the breakfast staff especially so. The walk to the centre of Amsterdam takes about 20 minutes or so (but that is a a leisurely pace) and you are in easy reach of all the main tourest sites.

Unique Quality: This is a basic hotel, somewhere to stay at a reasonable price, do not expect co-ordinated decor and lots of facilities. If you are visiting Amsterdam on a budget then this is a very good choice, near the station, near the centre of of Amsterdam, clean, reasonably priced and gives you the chance to stay in an original Dutch merchants house.

Y Boulevard = Bad Hotel

We stayed here the first time I went to Amsterdam. The hotel is quite a way down Prins Hendrikkade it's small and smells of damp. It was a cheap package deal so I wasn't expecting much but the hotel was dark and unpleasant. The staff were unfriendly and the room was damp, smelly and dirty. Stay away!

Unique Quality: Bar in reception that closes early!
