We went through Amsterdam in a day or so. We went on to Zuidwolde and there we stayed with families. The family I was with were wonderful. I wish someday to go visit them again. It's amazing that you can get so close to people in three nights. Zuidwolde reminded me very much of home. I liked that they rode bikes most of the places. The people our age were cool. We went to a dance type thing on the Saturday that we were there. Staying here with the family was my favorite part of the trip. We actually got to live in their culture and eat HOME made food. Delicious!

Hotel Quentin - This was the...
Hotel Quentin - This was the hotel for my second and third night. This place had a lot of character. The lobby had a nice little couch and bar to hang out at. The rooms seemed to be all pretty unique. My room was in the next building over which required a trip to the basement, through a maze of halls up some stairs, down some more stairs, through a court yard to my room. The room was small, the bed was soft and there was a TV mounted to the wall in the corner. The bathroom was on the third floor, I was in the basement (I had to plan ahead). I was told that the High Times team stays there during Cannabis Cup so they're smoker friendly. A bit closer to the action compared to Astrisk. Great experience.
I think I paid about $30 to $35 US a night.
Laid back little hotel with lots of character that is smoker friendly. If you are 2 people or are willing to spend a bit more to get out of the hostel this is a good place to go.

I stay private while visiting Amsterdam, but there should be no problem finding a place to stay here as this city offers a lot of different types of accomondations.
The Arena is a nice place for young travellers.
It has an OK cafè and nightclub, both frequented by locals.

central, and nice accomodation
Nice accomodation can be found on the Roemer Visscherstraat. These places are not cheap. About 100 US$ guilders a night for double room. Some places on this street have rooms for 3, 4 and 5 persons as well. The rooms are pretty and look clean. Book well in advance. Some hotels ask for a minumum stay of three nights. On weekdays special offers may apply. Oh boy, I sound like a travelbook! :-)
Since I live only 30 minute away from Amsterdam I have never slept there. But I walked through this street and as a tourist I would like to stay here, especially if you are interested in the art and history the town has to offer, but also fancy a beer in a pub sometimes. All are within walking distance.

We rented a great studio apartment right on Amstelstraat -
We paid around 180fl a night - which works out to about 90 bucks American. Screaming deal for the location- plus we had our own bathroom/shower, stove, frig and sink.
Fabulous views.... and if noise doesn't bother you (which it doesn't me and you get used to it after a couple days anyway) this is a great place. Perfect for people watching! It's right across the canal from the Hotel de L'Europe and was a great vantage point for taking all the trams at Muntplein. Within 3-4 doors you have a small store, a bar and the Rokerij coffeeshop (which by the way, has quality products)

I stayed in a very cute little hotel in a town called 'Monnikendam'. It was right on the waterfront, and there were hundreds of boats docked right out front!
It was very cozy and sweet!

I stayed for some days at Hotel Ibis. As I understand, it is a chain of budget-class hotels.
Buses to/from airport are going from early morning until late evening every 10 minutes, and they are free of charge. Hotel has clean and pleasant rooms, several eating places for every taste (breakfast is very good and served starting at 5am).

Depends of what you're looking for. There are very cheap hostels (sleep together with more tourists) but also very expensive hotels. Two of my favourites are the Pulitzer ***** Hotel and new in town Blakes Hotel (mrs. Hempel). Both at a canal-location and in the city-centre.
in dollars from 200 a night up to 600 a night

Hotel De Kosenaer (Or something like that!)
27 guilders (I think I can't remember exactly)
Yes the price was right. But then I didn't intend to spend a lot of time in there so I really didn't pay much attention.
It was warm and dry and that was all that I cared about.
