Airport to Mercure aan de Amstel

by ereefic

Can anyone tell me the best and cheapest way to get from Schiphol Airport to the Mercure aan de Amstel hotel?

Re: Airport to Mercure aan de Amstel

by CulturalCompetence

Take the train...Take the train from the inside of the airport terminal..That will take you to downtown Amsterdam...From there take the trolleycar to the hotel...

There is an Airport hotel shuttle bus.

Tickets available at the Connexxion Counter at Schiphol-Arrivals. The bus brings you from Schiphol Airport to your hotel every 30 minutes (between 7.00 and 18.00 hrs) or every hour (from 18.00 till 21.00 hrs.).
Fares:
One way: € 11.00
Return: € 18.00
Children under the age of 10: free of charge

The cheapest way is to take the train from Schiphol to Lelylaan station (make sure it's a "stoptrein" and not a "sneltrein"), then switch to the metro -- not the tram -- and ride to the Overamstel station. You don't need to go via Amsterdam Centraal.

A Sunday Night

by ereefic

I'm going to be arriving in Amsterdam on a Sunday morning. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a nice place to hang out on a Sunday night for some beers that has rock music? A bar or Coffee Shop, doesn't matter.

I'll be staying at Mercure aan de Amstel Hotel which I believe is kinda on the outer edge of town.

On Sunday´s all shops are open in the centre of Amsterdam ! So always busy !
For drinks etc. you can go to the Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein (lots of café´s and bars).

Hotel WITH a parking garage please!

by tigersharkjs

Hi All..We will be driving up to Amsterdam from Paris for a 2 night stay. We are looking for a hotel with a (preferably indoor) parking garage, as we want to "park the car" and leave it for the duration of our stay in Amsterdam. So it should be within walking distance of downtown/tourist area. Oddly, I have heard that car theft/vandalism is quite common in Amsterdam. This seems strange to me, and not in keeping with the general feeling of Amsterdam, but it has gotten me paranoid about the car! I look forward to hearing from you..thanks

Amsterdam Marriott Hotel - Stadhouderskade 12
Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel - Kattengat 1
The Park Hotel - Stadhouderskade 25
NH City Centre - Spuistraat 288 - 292
Tulip Inn Amsterdam Centre - Nassaukade 387-390
NH Barbizon Palace - Prins Hendrikkade 59-72
NH Museum Quarter Hotel - Hobbemakade 50
Hotel de l'Europe - Nieuwe Doelenstraat 2-8
Radisson SAS Hotel Amsterdam - Rusland 17
The Grand Amsterdam Sofitel Demeure Hotel - Oudezijds Voorburgwal 197
Crowne Plaza Amsterdam City Centre - Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 5
Mercure Hotel Amsterdam Arthur Frommer - Noorderstraat 46
Rho - Nes 5 - 23

Use www.multimap.com to see where they are located.

Big hotels around the Schiphol Airport are safer and cheaper to park and some of them have shuttle service. From the Airport train station it's only a 20 minute trainride. Driving your car in the center of Amsterdam is no fun for a firsttimer (see my Schiphol page).

Check on forehand if there's a space available in the hotel's garage (some have limited room) and how much they charge (can be Euro 20 or more per night).

Btw, driving up from Paris over the Antwerp Ring is no fun nowadyas due to the road works.
A faster detour maybe Antwerp - Eindhoven and taking the A2 highway to Amsterdam. From there take the A10 Amsterdam ring CCW and exit at Zeeburgertunnel, which will bring you close to the center. The Barbizon Hotel might be the easiest option.

Travel Tips for Amsterdam

Travel Without a Schedule

by taryn_treloar

I found most of my travel experiences very relaxing because I didn't have a set daily plan of what I was going to do/see. The girls that I traveled with to Amsterdam were similar in they were up for anything at anytime.

Feeling like you HAVE to see something would add an uneeded stress to a pleasant trip. The best part of Amsterdam in my point of view was walking through the city and seeing the diversity and unusual aspect that it had to offer. Amsterdam is a very beautiful and walkable city.

Amsterdam Tip

by doobrajohn

There was definately a lack of inhibition and reserve in the personalities I witnessed. In the States there are specific guidelines, ('Ignorance of the law is no excuse') which for the most part are challenged by the ignorant or people who don't mind the posibility of making their home in jail. Although I couldn't participate in the consumption of drugs due to my career, I was in awe of the Coffee Shops and the freedom for those who wanted to, to purchase marijuana, hash and mushrooms without the fear of arrest. The place was so laid back, it reminded me of a giant 70's party. I'm sure they have their scraps (fights) like most any place on earth does, I saw no indication of trouble, only smiles and laughter.

go to the coffe shops! you can select how strong weed you want and then buy it, roll it and smoke it! it´s very expensive but amsterdam is a very expensive city all in all. i smoked too strong weed and got sick. nah, to be serious, it´s the beauty of the place (the people make the place ugly). in a warm summer day, it´s sooooo pretty!!

Flower market

by Lalique

Ok, this place I missed while my last trip to AMS, probably got lost somewhere in RLD and joints' smoke.... :)))))
It's one of Amsterdam's landmarks, but nothing Special (with a big S), however a friend of mine asked me to buy an onion of amarillis, so there was no any better place for it!
The onion is still at my place, several days ago I found out that it started to grow, and I have no any bloody idea how to plant it.... better ask my friend to pick it up quickly!...

GETTING THERE.....SCHIPHOL AIRPORT......

by eden_teuling

BY ROAD

Schiphol Airport, only 20 minutes by car from Amsterdam centre is centrallly located on the Motorway network in the country's urban agglomeration.
The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht are a short distance away, while the rest of the country is easily accessible via the A 1, A 2, A 4 and A 9 MOTORWAYS.

BY RAIL

Schiphol can be reached by train from the Amsterdam city centre in 10 - 15 minutes...

There are also excellent rail connections with the airport from the rest of The Netherlands and abroad.
Furthermore, Schiphol has a stop for the High-Speed train to ANTWERP, BRUSSELS AND PARIS....

Train tickets are sold at the Netherlands RailWays counters and ticket machines at Schiphol Plaza - if you don't have coins for the machines, use the money changing machine at the Plaza.

BY BUS

Schiphol is located in a ramified network of local and regional bus connections.
KLM (Skyliner) and Martin Air (Skycoach) operate bus services to several German Cities, while Belgian bus company NECKERMANN operates bus services to ANTWERP AND BRUSSELS.

SCHIPHOL PLAZA

Everything is under one roof at Schiphol Plaza, the huge, covered square where all pedestrian traffic to and from the Airport converges: the railway station, the departure and arrival halls, and a shopping centre with 40 shops and food outlets.

Shops are open daily from 7AM till 10PM, incl. all public and national holidays.

The supermarket is open till midnight, while some food outlets are open 24 hours....
