A good place to stay

We stayed because I screwed up on Priceline. Soon however, we were happy with the stay. It is a very clean, quiet place with a very helpful staff. And since it is not inside the city it is more reasonble. There is a bike path that leads to the train. Very easy to do. If your looking to save a buck, and escape the city at night, this is a good choice.

Mercure Amsterdam Airport Hotel

by nicolajm

Hi, please can you help me?
My little sister has just booked a room in this hotel:

Mercure Amsterdam Airport Hotel
Oude Haagseweg 20 - 1066 BW
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

I have got a horrible feeling that it will be difficult for her to get into the town centre from there as she will not have a car. Please can someone tell me the best (and also the cheapest) way that she can get in and out of the city centre from the hotel? It is the first time she has been to the Netherlands\Amsterdam.
Thanks very much in advance,
Nicola

The metro system is quite simple in Amsterdam. i have been there several times and have never had a problem. The ticket price is only around 2.30 EURO for a 1 hour train pass. The train lines are very simple to figure out. If she chooses to take a cab it will cost her around 20 EURO to get to the city center. She would not want to have a car there anyways... parking is horrible and the streets are quite hard to get around on, especially with all of the pedestrians and bicycles. Bikes are everywhere and they have priority in there little bike roads. If you are not used to driving in the Netherlands... Stick to the public transportation. The locals are usually great about helping with directions to the nearest train stop. Just tell her to get on the next train that heads to central station and she will be set!

P.S.
Just got back from there this weekend... Had a BLAST!

The hotel is very close to the highways and i doubt there is good public transport there. But the hotel offers free shuttle service to the airport. You can take that and take the train from the airport to the citycentre.
It will cost 3 Euro and takes about 10 minutes or so.
But you can also ask in the hotel, maybe they have a better and cheaper way to get to the city.

All Amsterdam Airport hotels are listed under the VT-location Schiphol (although most hotels are located in neighbouring cities and villages). You can find the Mercure Hotel at http://www.virtualtourist.com/vt/6fbd0/3/-3/?o=2&i=1.

The closest stop for the Hotel is a busstop for citybus 164 (at 2 minutes walking) going from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to the IBM Main Office in Amsterdam Slotervaart.
From Schiphol you can take a train (20 minutes ride).
The other end of the line at IBM is just somewhere in the Slotervaart suburb and you still have to change busses (Connexxion bus 181) and take an Amsterdam tram (line 13) at the Admiraal Helfrichstraat.

The Mercure hotel used to be a Motel and has great highway entrance; but that is wothless to your sister.

Thank you so much for all your replies. It doesn't sound like the hotel is ideal, but I'll pass on all your information which I am sure will help her.
Thanks again,
Nicola
