A little hard to find for the uninitiated to Amsterdam, once found the location is in a quiet area outside of the inner centrum with easy walking distances to everything, along with excellent tram access.
Unique Quality: Enclosed courtyard for your automobile and your safety. Monitored by camera 24 hours a day.
Directions: Trams #16, #24, #25 south from Centraal, exit Vijzelstraat at Prinsengracht. Continue south left on Noorderstraat. Will see signs above.
I stayed six nights here. Rooms are medium, clean, with all the basic stuff (minibar, air, hairdryer, TV, phone, private bathroom). From 1 to 10 I would rate friendliness of Staff with a 5.
Unique Quality: Ok this is not a hotel with "views" or with a great service or with exceptional rooms. Do not expect this. Is a nice 3 star hotel, and very well located, you will be located at walking distances from the main atractions of the city.
It offers a good price - quality relationship.
Directions: Downtown Amsterdam
we stay for 5 nights on our business travel. coming from the airport by car, we find it easy to find the hotel. they also provide limited number of parking space. hotel is located in a side road so it's quiet area although so close to many favourite places in the city. several tram stations nearby make it easy to go anywhere. room is small but clean. free internet connection. no restaurant but provide healthy food at breakfast. small bar for a sip before going to bed. the staffs are helpful, even at the middle of the night.
anyhow, prepare for little sport if you get a room at upper floors since they don't provide lifts. also expect no view if you think of canal and gothic column over your window.
Unique Quality: quiet surrounding, make it a good place to have a good rest during night time.
tram stations, museum, cafe and restaurant nearby, as well as the famous albert cuyp market.
so close to holtkamp cakeshop, selling the best croquette in amsterdam.
We stayed there for 2 nights. Because there were 3 of us, we actually got a 2 bedroom suite in a separate building. The rooms are pretty decent sized, clean, and good value for the price. The only (minor) complaint is the sheer number of stairs. We actually have to go down a flight of stairs once inside our suite to get to our actual rooms. Since our luggages were a bit heavy by this time, we just left our suitcases in the landing. (There's enough room for 2 suitcases just inside the door and another in the middle landing.) We did get quite a bit of exercise running up to get stuff from our suitcases though.
Directions: Near the museum district, accessible by Tram 4, 24, and 25
We stayed only one night here before traveling from Amsterdam. The location was very convenenient to the Heineken Brewery and the Riks Museum. However, if I hadn't had a GPS, I would probably still be trying to find it! It is located in a very small side street, so be sure you have some good directions. The room was decent in size, however the linens, towels and furnishings were a bit tired. I frequently stay in Mercure Hotels and this was one of the lower end properties. However, for the price it was not a bad option. The breakfast was an additional 15euros, so we skipped it and went to a great little bakery down the street. There are a few complimentary parkings spaces, which was excellent as the parking in the adjacent streets was very tight.
Unique Quality: Location and price.
Travelling by car to Amsterdam (3 pax) and would like an hotel with parking perhaps out of Amsterdam proper but accessible by public transport
Those Amsterdam hotels I have seen on the net charge about Euro 25 parking/day - hoping that public transport would be less than that
Thanks
Formule 1 at Zaandam or ETAP near the Schiphol Airport.

Follow the P+R (Park & Ride) signs for cheap parking and easy public transportation to the city center (that's if you prefer a hotel closer to the center after all).
Many commuters coming from the east of the country park for free at Weesp train station (20 mins to Amsterdam Central Station).
I agree fully with the option of the Hotel Campanile in Amsterdam Zuid-Oost. I stayed there myself several times as well as our parties who visited us and it is very convenient if it falls within the budget.
The metro (20 mins to AMS centre) is just a few steps away from the hotel and it has free parking.
Thank you everyone for these suggestions - most helpful
