public transportation

by bandanna

Will my strippenkaart still be valid on the tram, or will I need to get an OV-chipkaart? My kaart is only a year old, so it should still be valid this October. I can't find any useful strippenkaart info on the GVB website. Are strippenkaarts still being sold?

Re: public transportation

The Amsterdam Public Transportation went over to the OV-chipkaart completely.
The Strippenkaart is no longer valid for the Amsterdam public transportation; only at some other parts in the country, but that ends in April 2011.

Strippenkaarts are being sold, but not at Amsterdam anymore.

Travel Tips for Amsterdam

Quaint bridges all over the place!

by Jenniflower

Water and the construction of many bridges have been of vital importance to Amsterdam’s development over the years. Along the banks of the river Amstel a city developed that heavily depended on the water for its survival, for defense, trade and to drink. It is often called the Venice of the North, and with good reason!

Your get Wooden Girder Bridges, Brick Arched Bridges, Movable Bridges and Iron and Steel Leaf Bridges. All used at different times for different things, changing with the times and development. All add to the character and charm that is Amsterdam. One of my fondest looks here is when you look straight on at a bridge and see so many other bridges in your vision at the same time down the canal.

The place I like most in...

by Globies

The place I like most in Amsterdam is the Albert Cuyp market. It's a general market where you can go to get your groceries but also to get specials bargains. Not any out of the ordinary market really but since I've lived in the area for most of my life this is a place I always like to go to. Just strolling along the stands and have a look in the shops behind the stands
is just a fun thing to do. Like to go best on weekdays, not so busy as Saturday. The best things about Amsterdam are the beautiful old buildings that show the history of the city and the new architecture that shows its future. The city is a 'historical map' that you read best if you walk through it. When I've been away this is what I miss most, walking through the city.

Pott Change.

by geoffboxer

Whilst the Post Office is still the best place to change cash, this place is just about the best if you cant make the Post Office.

Situated at Swissotel on Damrak, they do Wester Union/Money transfers. All at a fair rate.

DO NOT be conned by the Change Kiosks offering free commision and best rates, they are a rip off.

Watch out for (foreign) pedestrians!

by Nemorino

You don't have to worry about the local pedestrians. They know the system, stay in their assigned areas and look both ways before crossing a bicycle lane. Also they are probably cyclists themselves part of the time, so they know it from both sides.

You do have to watch out for those pesky foreign pedestrians, though. When these folks are engrossed in their tourist maps they are liable to step right in front of a pack of rapidly moving bicycles without even looking. And when this happens their gut reaction (assuming they are not seriously injured in the encounter) is to rush to the nearest internet café and post yet another Warning or Danger tip in VirtualTourist about how reckless and ruthless the cyclists in Amsterdam supposedly are.

As a cyclist you have to keep in mind that these folks typically come from morbidly over-motorized countries where they are accustomed to navigating city traffic by ear. In that sort of country nothing moves without a motor, so if you can't hear it you can assume it is probably standing still and can't hurt you.

Red light district - around Niewmarkt.

by A2002

Amsterdam is famous for the liberal laws on prostitution. It is amazing to have a walk along the streets, but can be quite intimidating and not suitable for children.
Lonely men go there for window shopping. We saw a huge group of tourists with a tour guide and we joined them for the "tour" of the red-light district.

But there's one interesting thing I met. A touter for prostitutes on the street asking a group of young guys behind us whether they want girls and followed by student discount available! What?! Student discount for getting a prostitute! Amazing!
