Magic dancing hotel

The Barbizon Hotel was the Hotel of the Tangomagia festival not only for sleeping (where you could get special tango-friendly prices), but also for dancing in the Tangocafe: each day during the festival between 16.00- 20.00, except December 31.
Dancing there was really nice because all the (international) people staying for the whole festival came there and it was a bit more easier there (than in the big rooms of the evening balls) to get in contact with dancers ;-)

Sleeping there was also a great experience! A very comfortable bed and a wonderful luxe-bathroom!!!! There was in the room a very interesting book about Amsterdam with infos and stories about the haven, the Jordaan-neighborhood, the history of the city....very interesting!!! I spent two hours to read this book and then I went to visit the Jordaan to see it in real!!!

Unique Quality: Great view on the little canal behind the hotel with old houses...

Great 5-star hotel. Got a good price on it in August 2003 - $112 per double room(2 people). Room was on the first floor, windows were right on the small canal and a tiny back alley, not bad.

Unique Quality: I think it has a bar and a restaurant, bunch of conference rooms and gym. Don't remember if there was a pool.

Luxury Accommodations

I stayed at the Barbizon Palace on a last minute stop in Amsterdam and found a discounted rate on www.hotel-booker.com (about $125 US). This is a very luxurious property in a less than optimal location. Just a couple of blocks from Centraal Station, and a stone's throw away from the notorious Red Light District, the very big hotel is part of a Dutch chain. The common areas are extremely luxurious. Your key card is required to operate the elevator.

Unique Quality: Comfortable, well appointed rooms are furnished with dark modern furniture. The bathrooms are ultramodern and boast all the amenities you could want.

Nice 4-5 star accommodations

Unique Quality: Underground Parking! It's neat to watch the cars pull onto this platform then disappear in the ground.

Right Across from the Railway Station

I stayed at the Golden Tulip Barbizon Palace hotel. It is listed as a 5 Star deluxe class hotel which was built in 1988. It is in a great location in the oldest part of Amsterdam and in the heart of the city overlooking the central station.

The main entertainment and shopping area is only a stones throw away. I have to say that after suffering the 'continental breakfast' for days (so typical of an organised tour), this hotel put on the very best breakfast of the whole trip. I remember it so vividly.
.
There was a wonderful assortment of muesli, fruit, breads and pastries as well as hot dishes (which I didn't have). Not a hard bread roll in sight!.

Unique Quality: The exterior of the building has been partly built from the facades of 19 historic buildings most of which date from the 17th century.

Father in law wants a good hotel to stay either side of a cruise

by ptitterington

Hello,
My father in law and another couple are looking for a nice, not too expensive hotel to stay in on night of 1st june and nights of 14 and 15.

He has never been there and does not know what area would be best. He is not able to walk a long long way but is reasonably mobile.

I downloaded a load of info but it seems impossible to get hotel phone numbers and I live the other side of the world from him and he cannot use his computer!!!

Any tips much appreciated

You can go to http://www.accorhotels.com
They list all of their hotel's information including phone numbers and address.
While I have used their Sofitel, I've worked with people who have used their Ibis and were happy with the rooms.

Something to keep in mind is the fact that one must drag their own bags around here. Using a Tram could be a problem. Using a cab will address this issue, however cab rates are very high. Location needs to be figured in, as well as nightly rate.

Food for thought, he could also stay in a Schiphol(airport hotels). Most of these have free shuttle service to/from the airport and the driver will load/unload bags.
