Amsterdam-places to stay
I stayed here twice in 2005, and would go back again. The rooms were clean and quiet and the people at the desk were friendly and helpful.

Amsterdam Friendliest Hotel
We were delighted with the hotel. It has an excellent location close to both the Rijksmuseum/Concertgebouw area and to the city center, but off of the main streets and on a quiet road. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel itself was immaculately clean and our room was very comfortable as well as quiet. Breakfast was generous and of high quality. The staff went out of their way to be good to us (for example, we overslept on our first morning, and they cheerfully provided a full breakfast--huge basket of breads, meat and cheese, juice and coffee, etc.--even though we were rather late. The staff was also incredibly kind regarding providing directions to sites, arranging our return to the airport, and other services.) Relatives of ours were in Amsterdam at the same time, staying at a much pricier hotel and their room was less spacious, with NO breakfasts provided! The only (minor) criticism that we could make regarding the accommodations is that our bathroom was extremely small. It was functional rather than luxurious. However, we highly recommend the hotel, and will stay there again when we return to Amsterdam.

There are some pictures at: http://www.hotelnicolaaswitsen.nl/en/information.htm
Rooms seem to be a little at the small side, but that's with more 3 star hotels that are housed in former city houses.
The prices at the website are clear: breakfast and tax included.
Nearest attractions are the Albert Cuyp street market
and the 3 Big museums a little further away.
Amsterdam is very walkable, otherwise a tramstop is not far from the hotel and within 10 minutes you are in the heart of Amsterdam.
