Advice on accommodation

by grasshopper32

Hi everyone,
I'll be stopping in Amsterdam in June for 2 nights and would like some advice on accommodation.
I'm 21 and will be travelling with a friend and my brother (we're all around the same age). We're keen to party 1 night (but not really into the grass - we're planning on just going on a pub crawl) and sightsee the rest of the time.

We're trying to decide between The Greenhouse Effect (in the red light district - Warmoesstraat 55) and a private room at the Bulldog Hotel (just outside the red light district - Oudezijds Voorburgwal 220).

Could you please tell me which would be a safer option? I don't know how safe the red light district is, especially when we're coming home in the middle of the night. I think our priority is safety, we don't mind a small bit of discomfort.

Thanks!

If you are not really into the grass I would not recommend both of them, but just comparing I would advice the Buldog Hotel.

This has nothing to do with safety, but more general.

The Red Light District is safe as the other parts of the center of Amsterdam as long as you use common street sense.

I'd say either is likely safe, just as those (esp.Warmoesstraat) crowded with visitors.

I was abit aprehensive in going to the RLD the first time, but found it to be much less gritty than expected.
Have been out late in several occasions in the RLD, and never felt unsafe.

Overall, It's just like anywhere else...if you get out of control drunk and stumble down empty side alleys, you're inviting trouble.

As a solo middle-aged female I agree entirely. The RLD is no any more dangerous than any other European city centre (and considerably safer than some, I suspect). Just use normal city common sense and you'll be absolutely fine

...I'll add that...

The Bulldog chain is very touristy. We've had locals that we've made friends with recommend the Greenhouse Effect.

Travel Tips for Amsterdam

Sciphol or Dam Square

by axwell

Yes in transit you can leave the airport easiest way is to use the train which takes about 10-15 minutes and takes you straight into Amsterdam central station cost 3-4 euros.
The Trains run regularly approx every 15 min so this will give a god time to explore the City.
The airport is like any other and as such 9 hours will be a very long time unless you hit a winning streak in the Casino.

Back on the mainland!

by barryg23

By the time we reached Holland, it had been almost 16 months since I had last been on the European mainland, and I only felt like I'd really arrived back here when we got to Amsterdam Central.
Firstly, there were smokers everywhere! Smoking has been banned in many public places in Britain, so I had forgotten what it was like to be surrounded by them. Furthermore, when walking around just outside the station, we noticed there were quite a few people smoking some of the stronger stuff too. I had read that this was mostly confined to coffee shops - actually, over the next few days I discovered it more or less was - so this was an initial surprise. Party on!!

Lived here for three months...

Lived here for three months while going to Disipleship training school. This city is so full of contrast !
I should have gone to more museums though ( I Kinda regret that )

Jesus haut van jau ! Sharing the gospel with the street people ( and other people) inside the Red Light District !
Darkness is in desperate need of Light you know .....

Walking the Canals

by pieter_jan_v

I recommend you explore Amsterdam by foot.
Any trip along the canals will you take along interesting places. Don't forget the alleys and the connecting streets between the canals; a lot of hidden shops and small businesses can be found just there. My favorites: Brouwersgracht, Noordermarkt, Elandsgracht, The nine little streets and the Kerkstraat.

People watching

by Igraine

These are some of the best spots for free people watching

Have a seat at our national monument (on pic) on Damsquare. It´s ideal for watching at all the fascinating people that come to Amsterdam and live there. The momument itself is for all Dutch people who died during World War II

If you don´t want to sit on cold stone try the Vondelpark, it´s situated near the Museumsquare. Jog with the locals, try on your skeelers, join in a soccerplay whatever. Also nice with a book and an icecream.

Last but not least is the Museumsquare. Join the crowd, sit back and relax. Once a year in August, there is an open air concert by the Concertgebouw orchestra, one off the best in the world.
