Warning! Stay away!!

What a let down! My room was tiny and did not at all resemble the nice pictures on the websites. TV broken, dirty carpet and bed head rest, very dated and old room and bathroom, hugely overpriced compared to other much nicer places nearby. Hugely disappointing as I had to pay 135 euros per night, a total rip-off! Can warmly recommend Park Plaza Vondelpark - same price range but much much nicer!

Quirky local hotel close to Vondelpark

This hotel is within a short walk from the big southern park Vondelpark off Overtoom, close to a tram stop. Each room is different with themes---I stayed in the Confucious room----most are pretty small especially the bathrooms, but the staff is pleasant. Ask for a room facing the back garden, one of which has a small balcony. The back garden is a definite lovely plus to walk around in the sunshine. I loved walking the length of the Vondelpark to get to Leidseplein---very calm with lots of trees. The filmmuseum is close by----I saw a set of 5 Alice (old Disney) cartoons with a real piano player playing the score this last trip.
Breakfast used to be included in the room, but I think that has changed----there are plenty of places to eat nearby if needed.

Unique Quality: Quirky rooms, nice back garden

maybe the most original hotel in Amsterdam

Each room is decorated in a different philosophical and cultural theme.

I stayed one night in the room dedicated to the French philosopher, Georges Bataille.

Small, Charming Room

The first room they gave us was very narrow, but clean and comfortable, and decorated in an Art Deco theme. Unfortunately, this room was on the street, and was so loud. I swear, I heard someone drop a quarter on the street. We requested a switch to the back of the hotel. All they had available was a small attic room. It was so blissfully quiet compared to the other. Also, clean and comfortable.

Unique Quality: All the rooms have themes, philosophers, ancient Egypt, Art Deco, etc. The rooms are small, but I think that's the case with a lot of hotels in Amsterdam. The breakfast was delicious and filling. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Some people on other sites complain that this hotel is too far from the action. We didn't find this to be the case and rather enjoyed walking through the park or taking the tram.

Something a bit different

This is a charming, quiet hotel close to the Vondelpark. Our room was one of two that opened on to a small garden, so we had our own private terrace. The room was spacious, clean and quiet, with good en-suite facilities. Breakfast was served in the main hotel on the other side of the street and was self-service continental, we enjoyed it. There was also a bar.

The hotel is part of an old town house, so the staircases can be steep and narrow, although lifts are available - if you have mobility problems, staff will be happy to find a room for you that is accessible.

The hotel is about a 10 - 15 minute walk from Leidesplein so may be a little far from the action for some, but there are plenty of good restaurants around the area, and decent transport links if you don't want to walk into town. It's also not too far from the museum quarter. We loved it, and would stay there again.

Unique Quality: It is quite unique, with each room being styled according to the themes of a particular philosopher or ideal. We stayed in the Sappho room, which was decorated with roses, cherubs and paintings of classical women. The theme is carried on through the dining room and bar. The hotel is run by a Philosophy graduate, who hosts monthly philosophy meetings (in Dutch) at the hotel. It's certainly not like anywhere I've stayed before!

A Wise Choice

This is really nice small hotel with a philosophical theme. Each room is decorated in mempry of a particular philosopher. Rooms are on the small side but the hotel is full of character. Break was served each morning in the living room.

Nancy booked this for our first trip overseas so we have fond memories of it. We tried to come back a few years later but it was fully booked so guess you need to book early.

Unique Quality: Full of character and within walking distance of all the town and park..

is you look for an hotel in the
p.c. hoofdstraat (smith)
jan luykenstraat (acro)
leidsekade (maas)
kerkstraat (hans brinker) budget hotel
you are than in the area of the museums and the leidseplein for nightlife and diner.
i dont know about the hotels only from hans brinker i heard it was ok.
maybe you can look for the sites for info and prices.
i hope you enjoy your stay in amsterdam

I know hotel Smit in P.C. Hooft. Very good neighbourhood and the hotel is simple but sufficient. I didn't sleep there myself but saw the rooms when I was with a group that stayed there. Prices are just below your budget (cheapest € 86,22 for a double).

As for hotel Maas on the Leidsekade... good hotel. I know the previous owner. But the price does stretch your budget a little as the cheapest double room is € 95 and go up to € 205.

I can recommend the Hotel De Filosoof, right at the Vondelpark (www.hotelfilosoof.nl). Every room is named after a famous philosopher and decorated accordingly. It is very beautiful and stylish, but might be just a tiny little bit more expensive than $100. But I thought it was worth it!
