bummed out lodging

do not give these people your money!!! you will regret staying there.first of all i arrived at7:30 am and took my time getting to the hotel at @11am.well,they told me the room would not be ready until 3:30 pm and all i wanted after a 10 hour flight was a bath and clean clothes.i was promised a room with 5 other people and was in with 7 others.you could not even walk due to all the people inthe room that should only hold 3 people.plus the bath room......what a f-----g mess.no clean sheets, ect.also ,no key!! the electic key was always to be kept by the desk, and if you went outside they would dog .,you for the key.all in all it really killed the whole spirit of my trip.oh ,and by the way the way, this hostel{also known as the pit of hell} is not even close to the action or almost anything else for that matter.definately get a private room .or even a good card board box would beat the spinx hostel.

Horrible hotel

Unique Quality: I stayed at this hotel for two nights and boy did it add to my very negative experience in Amsterdam. Just so it would be easy to read I summed up all the negative and positive points of this hotel.
Bad -
1. Deposite of 5 euros for the room and the reception refuses to take your key when you leave for the day. A cheap way to make money if people lose the hotel key. Highly unprofessional.
2. 5% charge if you decide to pay for your stay by a credit card.
3. Extremely narrow, and I mean narrow staircases. Usually Dutch hotels have a pully for your luggage or staff to carry them. Sphinx does not. Be careful not to break your neck. P.S. No elevator.
4. We were never imformed that not every room has a shower and a toilet. So if you don't want to pay extra, you have to share a shower and a toilet with other occupants.
5. Rude staff. Very loud and obnoxoius.Talks in the backyard into the wee hours of the night.
6. Usually hotels give you leway during what time you can check in, this one didn't.

Good points
1. Clean rooms.

Simply take a train from Haarlem to Amsterdam Central. You don't need a pass for that. It's a 16 or 17 minute train ride and a return trip costs € 6,70.

Hotel rooms prices are always per room, not per person.
Hostel prices are per person. See www.stayokay.nl (english version available).

A trainride is 17 minutes.

Costs: Single fare 2nd class Euro 3,60; day return ticket 2nd class Euro 6,20.

There's no train pass for 72 hours.

The Stayokay Haarlem hostel has prices in the range you are looking for; see:

Haarlem is an excellent shopping city. And quite compact. So is Amsterdam.

Haarlem and Maastricht were selected best shopping cities a year ago.

For shopaholics I added last week: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1b5437

Start at the Nieuwendijk (shopping street from the station to the Dam).

Try the Albert Cuyp and Waterloo plein street markets.

Flowermarket for souvenirs.

Magna Plaza if you have any money left.

Sphinx hotel is OK (there are more hotels like this at the Weteringschans).
