Perfect Location....Wonderful Hosts
by A TripAdvisor Member
We visited Amsterdam in August 2005 while studying abroad. We had such a wonderful time at the Sunhead of 1617. It's a very romantic and inspiring place to stay. We paid a bit of a premium price to stay in the red room, but it was worth every penny for the views, wonderful food, friendly hosts, and amazing room.
We stayed in the red room on the top floor--Vaulted ceiling, hardwood floors, and amazing view of Harengracht canal. The steps up to our room were steep, but architecture of building was unbelievable and unlike anything in the U.S. We started our mornings with a delicious breakfast--no schedules or need to rush down before the food was taken away.
Carlos, our host, was a great conversationalist and made us feel welcome. The location is ideally suited for anyone who wants to see Amsterdam's lively downtown (a 15-min. walk away) but also stay in Amsterdam's culturally rich and historical area (near the Jordaan area). Cafes are nearby, as well as the Anne Frank house, and boat service to ride the canals. For those of you who are coming in by train, the train station is also about a 15-minute walk. The walk allowed us to get our first glimpses of gezellig (Dutch word for that comfy, cozy feeling) in Amsterdam.
The perfect place to stay

Sunhead 1617 is a B&B on the Herengracht, one of the old canals in Amsterdam. My wife and I spent 5 nights there recently. In all our travels, we have never found a place that is as pleasant, friendly and in every way ideal. The house is from 1617 but has been remodeled and furnished beautifully. Our room (the Salmon room) overlooked the canal and the peaceful street in front. The room was large, airy and light. The furniture and furnishings were great. We had our own espresso machine and supplies along with tea. The breakfast was served downstairs in old/new kitchen. The food was plentiful and wonderful; the conversation was engaging. The owners are friendly and helpful without any sense of being intrusive.
The location is central and we walked to every museum as well as the train station. We cannot offer a higher recommendation.
Home away from home

From an American who had never been to Europe.
We had only planned on staying 2 nights, but were having such a good time in Amsterdam decided to stay for 4. The owners of Sunhead were wonderful. The accomadations were clean and warm, the breakfast every morning was awesome and the location is terrific! Located just 2 blocks away from the Red Light District and some of the best coffee shops, Sunhead was the perfect place to stay. Every day I would come back to a completely clean room. There is a great coffee shop just a block away called Amnesia as well as a wonderful spa called Deco. I would highly recommend Sunhead. Thanks guys!
A great Amsterdam experience!

Sunhead of 1617 is a beautiful canal house along Herengracht. My friend and I stayed in the red room overlooking the canal, which was a great view! The hosts, Carlos and Roelf-Jan, were wonderful people. The dining room was very warm and beautifully adorned with murals (painted by Carlos). The breakfast was absolutely delicious, most especially, the yogurt filled with fresh fruits and variety of nuts (there's nothing like it!). The location was perfect. It was walking distance to about all the key spots in Amsterdam, especially Anne Frank House.
We had an excellent stay at Sunhead. It was a true feel of Amsterdam. I highly recommend this place and would definitely stay again in a heartbeat.
A great apartment that you should keep to yourselves!

Being highly recommended by a friend who stays regularly in some of the Sunhead apartments, we stayed for the weekend at their Singlet apartment.
It was perfectly located, being a quick stroll into the city centre, but being perfectly located for the great bars, restaurants and quality side of Amsterdam.
The basement apartment was well kitted out and very clean and although the Singlet is relatively quiet at night, you'll sleep well anyway in the bedroom which is at the back of the property (although could be a little claustrophbic if you don't like being without a window.) The bathroom with corner bath was a welcome relief most nights after a good stroll in the day! The kitchen was equipped for all that we would need and the tv
Thanks to Rolphe and Carlos for their courtesy and hospitality. Keep up the good work!
Great location, quiet

The Sunhead is in a wonderful, quiet location in the old canal area of Amsterdam near the Jordaan. It's walking distance to almost everywhere in the city center. As others have noted, the breakfasts are delicious, the hosts are congenial, and the place is spotless. I would sit in the window of the red room and read overlooking the canal. It does have steep steps, however, and has the small feel of a 17th century canal house if those are issues. We got very fit climbing the stairs. A great cat also.
Loved the Yellow Room

I just returned from 3 nights in Amsterdam. The Sunhead of 1617 was just perfect. The owners were very helpful in pointing me in the direction of some fantastice area restaurants. While the Sunhead is right in the heart of Amsterdam it is on a very quiet street on a canal away from the tourist rush. The Yellow room was spacious and quiet - and the breakfast was perfect: yoghurt with fruit, fresh bread with cheese, orange juice and an espresso maker in the room. The entire house is decorated beautifully with a strong Asian influence - images of Lord Buddha welcome you as you enter the house and the Yellow room. Keep up the good work!
One of my favorite places in the world

The Sunhead B & B is one of my favorite places in the world, a true home away from home. I have been staying there for years, whenever business (or pleasure) calls me to Amsterdam. The hosts, Carlos and Roelf, and their friendly, able staff are wonderful, ready to help with tips around town. Breakfast here is yummy and ample. And the location overlooking the canal can't be beat!
I have recommended this cozy place to friends for years. Everyone has uniformly been pleased. Don't miss it!
