My first experience in a Hotel in Amsterdam was at Swissotel Amsterdam..
The Hotel is situated just in the center of the city.. Dam square is the main center where many attractions are taking place and the hotel is just one building to the square..
In the first floor lays the reception and the restaurants..The restaurant is privately operated so it has a separate entrance from outside for other guests..
The hotel has rooms for both non-smokers and smokers..
The rooms are very well decorated and has quiet enough space. The hotel has wireless service inside the rooms, so if you have a WiFi laptop you can use in the hotel for internet connections..
So you want to stay in the heart of Amsterdam, but still want to be able to get a good night sleep...I'd say book a room at the Swisshotel. It's right on Dam Square, and our room faced the square, but we couldn't hear a thing from the outside world. We were upgraded to a suite when we arrived, so we certainly had a great first impression. It doesn't have what you'd call a large lobby, it's actually quite small, but the rooms are gorgeous.
Location, Location, Location! It's great being able to run back to the hotel to "freshen up" every couple of hours, without having to hop on a bus or taxi.
Spent 4 nights in early September at the Swissotel. My wife and I had a "superior" room. Room was very nice with a large bathroom and a king bed that was actually 2 beds pushed together. The room was on the 5th floor, corner overlooking the inner courtyard so even with the window open it was not very noisy. The summer construction in front was almost completed. Didn't try the hotel breakfast with so many other choices in the area.
Location/Location/Location
Efficient front desk for check-in, check-out and recommendations.
Good quality place, and location is ideal. Easy walk from Central station (so easy from Schipol as well) and right by Dam square. Restaurants by the dozen on the doorstep.

We stayed in this hotel in Feb 2004 and we loved it! From the outside the hotel didnt look very exciting but when we entered the foyer the staff were so friendly and inviting. The foyer was beautiful and our room was even better. We stayed in the Junior suite which was absolutely beautiful, we had an amazing view over Dam Square and even had our own balcony! The facilities in the room where really excellent and the bathroom was huge!! We are taking a trip back there for Valentines weekend this year and will be staying in the Junior Suite again, I cant wait!!
The view from the room was great, the balcony was amazing and the hotel itself is very near to all the attractions. The accomodation itself was very impressive, clean beautiful and the staff are extremely friendly. I would definately recommend this hotel to anyone.
Nice hotel. Room was very clean and moderm. The only down side is there was a 12euro charge for internet access from the room. They offer 3 computers for internet use, but they were often in use by other guests or not functioning.
This hotel has a great location. It is right next to the Dam Square, two blocks from the RLD, and one block from Warmoesstraat - a heavily coffeeshop laden street. It is less than a 10 minute walk from the Centraal Station.
Well located next to Central Square. Within walking distance to the train station, the museums and everything you could care to see!
As a woman traveling alone abroad, safety is a key issue for me. The front desk is located within five feet of the front door, assuring that staff sees all comings and goings. An elevator which requires a room keycard to operate also helps to keep the riff raff from busy Damrak Street out.
The hotel staff was extremely professional, helpful, and friendly. We arrived early (11am) and were given a room immediately. The lobby was small, but nice.
The rooms were very nice; spacious by European standards. The bathroom was very modern with an interesting shower which included a half-length glass partition instead of a curtain or door.
Amenities were great - each room had an espresso maker.
Limited (decent) English TV channels, for what it's worth.
Directions: Unbelievable location; directly in Dam Square Adjacent to shops, including a convenience store (7/11-like), fast food establishments, restaurants. A plethora of coffee shops were nearby, as was the Red Light District.
