Budget hostel for non-smokers

Large dorm areas segerated by sex (darnit), non-smoking, simply but fillinf breakfast. Lounge area is great place to meet tourist from all over. Good location right in the RLD and near many attractions. Unfortunately, you have to be in by midnight.

Good and safe youth hostel for all ages

If you want to get away from the pot smoking or alcohol swinging crowd then the Shelter is a nice peaceful haven, one of several Christian hostels in Amsterdam, nice ethics but no religious affiliations are enforced but provides a clean and well run hostel.

Single sex dorms from 4 beds to large 20 bed dorms surrounding a lovely garden courtyard with fountain.

The latest 2012 info is that there are now 2 bedded rooms - Fri and Sat nights are 33 euro a person for these - thats good value particularly if you are a couple of friends travellng together - a lot cheaper than the best hotel deals Ive seen around - and breakfast is included. For only 5 euro more than a bed in a large dorm. On Sunday and week nights the beds in the 2 bedded rooms drop to 26 euro a bed.

Good system of security with front door locked and 1am curfew, lockers provided in each room/dorm.
Breakfast included, if early breakfast required before their 8am start a packed one can be arranged.
Reasonable rates, actually cheaper than most others, and nights are cheaper after the first night of stay.
Luggage can be left in the lock up area during the day which is very helpful for pm flights or departures. Check in is from 1pm but you can arrive early and leave your bags here.
Meals and snacks, hot and cold drinks can be provided until late at night, so want to come back and put your feet up for a midnight tea with go for it!!

21 euro in a large dorm room, 25 euro in a 4 bed dorm

Unique Quality: Good value for the increasing expense that staying in Amsterdam, outside of package deals, seems to now incur for single or budget travellers.

Amsterdam's cheapest

Theres two hostels in Amsterdam which are the cheapest and the best, if you don't necessarily have to smoke weet or take mushrooms: the Shelter city hostel, located in the middle of the red light district and its sister hostel in the Jordan area. Prices: 17 euro's mid season, 16 low season and 19 high season, all including simple breakfast... You'll make new friends like nowhere :)

I'm there since september now, going to China in summer. When I think of leaving I'm already missing it !

Regards, Roger

Unique Quality: Clean rooms and bathrooms, movienight, creative nights, they organize bible discussion for those interested, sockertable, and the best staff I ever met ! Cool cafe with piano, nice music, games and a relaxed atmosphere...

Downside: curfew at 1 pm and no alcohol inside.

Central location accommodation in Amsterdam

This Christian hostel is located just around the corner of the red light district but still manages to be really nice, safe, clean and comfortable place to stay. The dorms are quite big, but if you're used to hostel travellng, it's ok. I was also glad that the Christianity didn't really show anywhere else than in the name of the hostel.

The Shelter - Amsterdam

I stayed at the Shelter City - Amsterdam for my entire 3 1/2 day stay. The stay was alright. I turned out to be a Christian hostel, so if you can stand that, it's pretty decent.

All rooms have a minimum of 12 beds and lockers are included. It wasn't a problem for me, but they don't allow smoking except in the courtyard, and no alcohol allowed. Spent most of the time out of the hostel except for sleeping.

I did end up at the hostel when they were giving away a free dinner. From what one of the employees told me is that they do it like twice a week. You have to sit through a couple skits that have to do with God and stuff, but if you can sit through it, the dinner was pretty good.

Shelter City

Who would have predicted that in a town renowned for prostitution and drug use the cheapest and best hostel would be run by hard core Christians?! In the red-light district no less!
The Shelter City is a novel - and most importantly comfortable - experience for any backpacker. The hostel has four dorms (women and men seperate), lockers, an awesome cafe and courtyard, and ... a soundtrack of Christian rock music!
I am an atheist, but the Shelter is truly a haven for the weary traveller, if not an ironic place in a 'steeg' featuring coutless transexual prostitutes! The staff are extremely friendly, the cheese sandwiches are divine (especially after a few tokes) and the showers run hot ... Admittedly the staff are keen to coerce you into their nightly bible study classes, but if you take it all with a sense of humour your stay in The Shelter will be second to none.

Unique Quality: Cheese jaffles. Crazy Romanians. American bible bashing backpackers ... ahhh the laffs!

Crazy Christian Youth Hostel... Red Light Dist.

I know, I know… I said I was violently opposed to no-budget travel BUT this place holds a special place in my heart. And if you have to hostel in Amsterdam this is the only place to do it. One one side you have the needle exchange program, and on the other side you have a whore house. Not bad for Christians.

If your looking to get some space from your travel partner/boyfriend, then this is the place to go. It's smack dab in the red light district. And you can sing for your supper. Oh, and one night, some chick FELL off the top bunk! I bet she still slurrrrrs her words!

Unique Quality: The Shelter City has a total of 168 comfortable beds in dorm-style dorms. There are separate dormitories for men and women, each of them divided into sections containing four to eight beds.

Open: every morning from 7.30 am until curfew.
Curfew (closing time): 1.00 am Friday and Saturday nights; midnight on the other nights
Age limits: 16-35
