More about The White Tulip Hostel

If You Need A Wireless Internet Connection

by johngayton

There are plenty of bars and cafes around Amsterdam that offer free Wi-Fi. Personally I usually use the Irish bar at De Witte Tulp (The White Tulip) hostel on Warmoesstraat where they are more than happy to let you plug into their electric as well. Obviously you need to buy something (which is never a problem for me!) and to get the access code from one of the staff. Beer prices are quite reasonable and if you get peckish they also offer a sort of Irish-style pub menu.

Woermoesstraat is the street that leads to the Red Light district from Centraal Station and The White Tulip is about halfway along - watch out for the Irish tricolour.

Cheap Dutch specialties

Cheap Dutch specialties

Hi, I have another post about Dutch food (in Amsterdam, as well as other areas). Please let me know where to find the lowest-priced/decent-tasting versions of these foods. Preferably at places where local's go to eat, (not touristic).

eat: frites - pannekoeken - Wentelteefjes - Poffertjes - rijsttafel (indonesian) - maatjes haring (Albert Cuyp Markt), hutspot, winkel appelgebak, belegde brootjes, kroketten - stroopwaffels - leyden cheese (nettles).

Also, please let me know the name of the common, discount supermarket in the Netherlands.

Thank you for your help.

Stroopwafels from the Lidl discount supermarkets are really good, and recently tested as one of the best...

In the center of Amsterdam are some Albert Heyn shops (AH); not the cheapest, but thay have good food.

Cheaper local ones are Bas van der Heyden and Dirk van den Broek.

Looks like there only 2 LIDL in the central Amsterdam area, and no ALDI at all, so I will look out for those you mentioned, how does Jumbo compare in prices with the two Dutch named shops you mentioned?

Re: Cheap Dutch specialties

Jumbo is also one of the price fighters.

Albert Heijn may not be a discount store, they do have seriously cheap products. look for the red 'euroshopper' products, they're usually cheap and good quality. I think you'll have a hard time to find wentelteefjes and hutspot somewhere in a restaurant or something like that- i can't remember ever seeing those on a menu. However, if you stay somewhere where you can use a microwave, albert heijn also sells pre-prackaged hutspot, boerenkool, andijviestamppot etc.
Albert cuyp is a great place for all kinds of food. Indonesian rijsttafel is lovely at the indonesian restaurant 100 meters south from Artis zoo.

Golambers, I think it was Pieter-Jan who recommended this restaurant once for traditional Dutch food: http://www.moeders.com/

Still want to go there myself!

I have good memories of Moeders; see http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1130fc/

I remember there were some real local hanging around and we had a great conversation as well.

Travel Tips for Amsterdam

The Royal Palace in Dam...

by shivan

The Royal Palace in Dam Square

This place is lovely, too bad I had no time to enter the Palace to visit.
The Dam area is crowded of people at all times day and night.
The Dam is actually a very large road that connects the center of the town. Shops all around here.
Please, all you dutch friends of mine, don't kill me if I say nonsenses!

Architecture

by micas_pt

Amsterdam's architecture delighted me. My idea of typical Dutch house is narrow, tall, with lots of windows, steep rooftop and a kind of look that reminds me of doll's houses - i was fascinated walking around streets and kept looking up. The steep roofs make a unique wonderful rooftop scenario, mainly in those charming tree lined streets by the cannels.

next to the Rijksmuseum

by chancay

The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, set in its historic home designed by P.J.H. Cuypers, houses the largest collection of art and history in the Netherlands. The museum has an internationally renowned collection based around the paintings of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic, the Golden Age, including twenty works by Rembrandt, four by Vermeer and numerous other paintings by artists such as Frans Hals and Jan Steen. Displayed at the very heart of the museum is Rembrandt’s Night Watch. But the museum houses more than just paintings: there are superb collections of silver, delftware, doll’s houses, prints, drawings, the mysterious Asiatic art and a recent completely renovated presentation on Dutch history. Works of art on paper, prints and drawings and since 1996 the photographic collection, are shown four times a year in different exhibitions. Prices:

Individuals
< 19: free
Adults (from 19): € 9

Entrance free: museum pass holders (Rijksmuseum Year Card, National Museum Year Card/MJK, ICOM, ICOMUS), members of Vereniging Rembrandt, members KOG, members Vrienden van de Aziatische Kunst, UNESCO.

Reduction 50 %: Rabo/MJK, NS/MJK.
Stadspas holders pay € 7,20

For some exhibitions there is an additional surcharge.

Last minutes shopping rush....

by Lalique

All stores are about to close in 30 minutes.... we enter Magna Plaza just to have a look inside it, as we were told it has very beautiful decoration being an ex Central Post Office....
Two completely lost young Brit gals rush to us and ask where they can find Cinderella shop....
- Oh, it's on Kalverstraat
- Oh, where? where? Show it to us! (and they poke unto us a crumpled city map).
We show, they seem relieved....
- Is it the place where we can buy party gowns?
- Errr, not exactly... we think it's a shoe shop... More over it's closing in 15 minutes.
- ....???!!!!!
In a minute fraction we see the gals rushing to Magna's exit.... hope, they'll have luck!
