Day trip
by rtnichols428
We are a group of 4 adults visiting Amsterdam at the end of july. I am trying to arrange a couple of day trips London and Germany (a friend suggested Cologne) I am running into language barriers on the websites-from what I can tell the eurostar is the cheapest and fastest way to get to London but I cannot find a train route into cologne-it doesnt seem like a very long way and I didnt think I would have this much trouble----any suggestions?

Hi
I don't have the answer to your train question, just keep in mind that a daytip to London or Germany is a bit short....You might want to book accommodation too.
Also check the budget airlines for cheap flight from Amsterdam!

The Eurostar connection to London is through either Brussels, Lille or Paris, so you would have to get to one of those places. From Brussels and Paris the trip is 2 hours, slightly less from Lille.

If you want a journeyplanner for trains to Cologne use:
http://www.ns.nl/cs/Satellite/travellers#
Departure station : Amsterdam Centraal
Arrival station: Keulen.

It looks like you haven't really been looking very hard :-) If you type "Amsterdam Cologne" in to google the first hit you get is for the timetable for trains between these places...
The best online timetable is the German one:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
This one has most trains of Europe, and no language barrier :-)
You'll quickly find out that London is not a practical day trip destination from Amsterdam, and that Cologne is just about doable. However, I'd look in to places like Antwerpen or Brussel.

Amsterdam Airport

One of the nicest airport in Europe is Amsterdam Schiphol airport.. When you arrive to Amsterdam you will realise that arrival hall and Departure hall lounges are the same place..
IIt has many cafes, somore than duty free shops, you will see food and beverage places.. The first floor has the rest places, waiting halls, Duty free shops and Cafes and when you go up, there are more cafes and restaurants there..

Take a tour on the canals! You will see a different view of the city. I took a trip early in the morning before the rush, so the skipper had more time to explain things (he turned off the taperecorder).
One interesting thing I learned was that they used to pay tax according to the width of the houses. This is the reason why so many are very narrow. But then they can be very long!

The begining of the end of 2002....
Was surprised indeed.... After two days of permanent raining, it was a real present to see a bright sunshine.... was so delighted that after waking up immediately grabed my camera and took a pic from the window.... stop the moment and keep it.... :))))

Get the free map from the hotel or tourist information. The half circle canals always guide you in Amsterdam - hard to get lost, but this specific tourist map is great in another sense, not only to give you the shortcuts from A to B:
We were three collegues spending a weekend in Amsterdam, all equipped with the same tourist map (marked with guiding numbers for different sites), and mobile phones. We wanted to do different things, split and meet, split and meet again. Instead of dealing with addresses and how to get there and where exactly to meet each other, we speedily just could communicate like this:
- I'm at 12 (on the map), where are you?
- I'm a centimeter from number 3. Talked to x and she's close to 6. She hopes to see us at 4 around 8. OK?
It was very simple!

Holland has the most successful flower industry in the world. Orders are sent
daily by jet to all corners of the world. Located on the south side of the Singel
Canal, the Bloemenmarkt is the world's only floating flower market. This
incredible fleet spans four blocks, hundreds of stalls on moored barges selling
exotic blossoms, bulbs, and potted plants at very low prices.
Questions and Answers
Q: Bar/room hire in Amsterdam "Hello. I'm hoping to hire a bar, or room in a bar, for three or four hours (somewhere we can drink and potentially play cards). I..."
A: "Try the VOC-Cafe; see: http://www.schreierstoren.nl/
They have the basement for hire or you might use the Herenkamer with a great view over the canal.
